Carolina Chocolate Drops in Three Oaks, MI

Posted by Kevin G on Friday, May 7, 2010

We just returned from a CCD concert in Three Oaks, Michigan at the Acorn Theater. We had learned about the concert a few weeks ago when we were visiting the wine shop (we're not winos but we like wine) at the theater, and no one was minding the shop. The staff was busy setting up for a show that night, so I had to wander into the theater part and ask if someone could help us check out. While waiting, my wife found a schedule of events and saw that the Drops were coming to the Acorn May 7. Since it's right around our anniversary, we had to go. We've followed them for a few years now and were keen to see them live. The price was right, too: 20 bucks a seat.

What a show! Each of these musicians is talented beyond any hope of mine. All of them play banjo, some clawhammer, some a mix. They play fiddle, bones, quills, snare drum, jug (the jug was somehow misplaced before the concert, and caused an amusing, but brief, delay while their manager tracked it down), harmonica, and Rhiannon Gibbons has a versatile, powerful, moving voice. They played many of the songs from their new CD, including a haunting, wonderful version of Snowden's Jig.

Seeing them in person is a must. Although we have several of their CDs, we had no idea how engaging the Drops are in person. The Acorn theater is a small venue, with no more than 200 seats, and we were surprised that a well-known band like them would play there. But the theater was perfect for them and allowed them great interaction with the audience. They're concert was very personal, fun, lively and engaging. It was a great show, and I recommend it to anyone who's near an upcoming tour stop. They stuck around after the concert to speak with the audience and seemed truly thankful for the appreciative crowd. Find out if they're coming to a town near you. Find out now. Get tickets. Go.

The closest they'll get to you, Mike, is MA, I think. Here's a link to the tour locations: http://www.carolinachocolatedrops.com/tour_dates.

My best,

Kevin

I saw the Drops when they played at a jugband festival here in Louisville about 2 years ago. Great show in an outdoor amphitheater in one of our city parks. I got a chance to talk to Rhianna Giddens and Dom Fleming at the CD table and thank them for visiting Louisville. One of Justin Robinson's violin teachers lives in Louisville, and I think that played a role in their appearance here.

Correction: Yes, it's Rhianna Giddens. I was so excited after seeing the concert, I couldn't even take the time to get her name right. My apologies. And thanks for pointing this out in such a gentle way.

After this concert, too, they were very approachable and friendly. I shook Justin Robinson's hand and thanked them for performing in such a small, local setting. He was very gracious.

Kevin, somehow I missed this report at the time (the friends feed is so interminably long these days) but thanks for taking the time to write it. The Drops are indeed great live and we've got to see them twice so far over here in the UK. Her name is Rhiannon Giddens by the way (third time lucky!). Best, Maria
