Today is Wade Mainer's 103rd birthday. Wade is one of the best two-finger pickers and early Bluegrass musicians of the 20th century. He was born today in 1907 in western North Carolina(Buncombe County). I have always liked Wade's style of banjo pickin' and am happy to see that he's still alive today for his 103rd birthday. Wade's brother, J.E., was also a big name in early Bluegrass music. He passed away about thirty years ago or so.
Here's a great video of Wade & Julia Mainer doing what they do best. This is from the late 1980s and was recorded in Maggie Valley, NC.

If I could ever meet him or any of his family members, I'd ask if he knew my Great-grandmother's family(the Wards) from Weaverville, NC. My grandad's mother's side of the family was from there.
