I was told recently by a professional player that my playing lacked a foundation... kinda ticked me off. I'm glad he did cause I'm stubborn, I added 8 hours a week to practice

I remember once being told by a "friend'' that my timing was "terrible"...I know that ticked off feeling well! I bought a metronome the next day and have played relentlessly with it ever since. It got easier and better real quick. Hang in there, bud...oh, and learn to play backup too...as knowing the chord progressions and excellent "chucking" technique is a huge part of the foundation. All the best.
