Okay, this is probably stupid, but we went out for dinner the other night and he let me pay. And I feel so much better.
I guess I find it kind of amazing just how incredibly stressed I’ve been about this whole situation. I mean we’ve known each other for five years now and things didn’t used to be so complicated. But then he broke up with his girlfriend and suddenly everything just got really weird.
I’d love to say that things got weird because he’s interested in me. He’s a good guy. I like him. I’m attracted to him. If I thought that he was interested, I’d give it a shot. I don’t know if it would work out—the age difference between us (10 years) is pretty substantial in a lot of ways and there are some other basic differences between the two of us. But you never know unless you try, and certainly I care about him a great deal.
But this is where things got weird. I kept telling myself that it shouldn’t be this complicated. Either he was attracted to me and interested in a relationship or he wasn’t. Okay, so I’ve known him for a long time. I know how he acts around women he’s attracted to. I’ve seen the way he flirts. He’s told me about the little gifts he’s bought for this woman or that woman. This past year since he broke up with his girlfriend I’ve watched him. There have been a couple of women I knew he was attracted to and interested in. I listened to his stories about his date the night before or the CD he made for one of them because he thought she’d like the songs. He would tell me about a text message conversation he’d had with someone or a string of emails or the phone conversation he’d had. I know how he “courts” a woman.
And he wasn’t “courting” me.&n
