I just got my banjo back from the repair shop! I don't know how this happened, but the head was massively busted after just 6 months of use. I'm not that hard on it, so I'm not sure what happened. It was finished quickly and they did a great job. So happy to have ma' baby back!!
I just can't figure out what might have caused it. Because, obviously, I'd like to avoid doing it again.
Also, I think I will attempt to change it myself next time. I was just intimidated by the daunting task because I'd never tightened the head, or reset the bridge before. I will be trying out a fyberskin head this time instead of the frosted head. Just for fun, to see how I like it.

Emma, glad you're back in business. When you only have one banjo, the withdrawl can be brutal! I live a couple of hours from T.O. and I have noticed this winter, there has been a lot of fluctuations in humidity. Maybe it just got a little too tight and split. Or it could have been a faulty head right from day one. You never know. Anyhow, I'm glad you got it back.

I think you guys could be right - Canadian winter (and constant radical changes in temperature and humidity) may have been to blame. Or maybe they just made a faulty head go that much faster!
Its probably no coincidence that it self destructed after I took it on a trip outside.
I'll let you all know how I like the fyberskin. It's pretty cool how it really changes the sound just using a different head.
