found out what's wrong with the banjo ... the neck has a slight convex BOW to it in the center ... anyone know how to plane THAT out?

Do you have a truss rod that you can adjust?

Unfortunately no ... it's a solid piece of wood from the head to the tailpiece. I think I can take the neck off, and replane the "fretboard" surface on a belt sander ... ???

I'm not a wood worker so I really don't know. But, that sounds like a good idea to me. How else are you going to remove the excess. Good luck. I wish I had the initiative to build a banjo. I just play mine.

You plane it off with a.... (wait for it).... plane!
Convex is better than concave, that's for sure. A nicely sharpened block plane or smoothing plane with a fine set should do the trick, as long as you go with the grain. Whatever you use, go slowly and just keep checking with a straight edge until it is straight. Good luck.
