Today I was listening to Hot Rize play the Martha White song and I focused on the well known banjo jingle solo, because I have been attempting to play that little snippit for a very long time. I noticed that the forward rolls were kind of played even rythm as fill licks, so I made a note to try it when I got home today. Well, my personal playing style is very bouncy. I much prefer playing bouncy compared to even rythm so I just don't play even rythm much. I've never been obsessed with speed. I've always just tried to stay clean and clear, but the Martha White jingle is just fast, so I've always tried to play it that way. Today I played it fast AND even rythm. Holy crap, it came out like machine gun. For the first time my left hand couldn't keep up. I must have cranked it out at 190 on those fills. I had to slow it down so the rest of the song makes some sense. I find it very encouraging that I will in all likelyhood be able to play as fast as I'll ever need to. Given, I won't be able to do warp speed on most stuff for quite some time, but I couldn't be more sure now that I'm capable of it. It will just take some time. God speed to you all!
