This week I will be taking two gigantic steps in the right direction in my playing. Step #1: I will be meeting up with Scott (JethroBodine here on the hangout) to do a little jamming. Perhaps I can learn a little from him (also a beginner, or so he says...) and perhaps he can learn some from me, although the latter is unlikely. Step #2, I am taking my banjo toi a professional to have it checked out and set-up. It's time to see if this banjo really has a good sound, or if it's just my imagination.
I have been having some setup issues with the old Alvarez. I generally like the sound of the banjo, although some teaking wouldn't hurt. The neck angle and string height is my biggest issue at the present time. I'm hoping that having a competent luthier work on this thing will get me to where I need to be.
When I first bought this banjo the neck was set at a very shllow angle, almost parallel with the rim (maybe a 1 degree angle at most). As such, the bridge was a 1/2" bridge and the neck was not tight against the rim. If I tightened the neck to the rim, it increased the angle, but it also made it unplayable due to the shallow height of the bridge. I have done some tweaking and now have the neck at approximately 3-4 degrees, and the bridge is a 5/8" bridge now. The only bridge of this height I had access to was a cheap one from the local music store in Tyler, but it'll due until I have a setup done.
I'm excited to see how things go this week. I think it'll be fun!
