Merry Christmas to everyone here on the Hangout! We returned Wednesday night from a very abbreviated trip to NYC. The trip was a 25th anniversary gift from my wife's sister, and we were supposed to meet them in NYC on Sunday around noon. Well: You all know about the snowstorm they had there. So our original flight was canceled, then the flight the next day had mechanical problems and left 7 hours late! (Thank you Northwest.) We knew that travelling in the winter has its risks, but how often do you get a chance to visit one of America's greatest cities. Plus, I'd never been there before, embarrassed as I am to admit it.
So with basically one day in the city, we did everything we could: Little Italy, Chinatown, Mickey Mantle's, Staten Island Ferry, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Rockefeller Center at dusk (I'll post some photos later), Times Square, Union Square, Chelsea. Of course, everything was basically a photo op, but we still had a great time, and the travel gods were with us on the way back, helping us squeeze in to South Bend just as the ice storm was hitting. (The flight after ours was canceled. There was NO WAY we were spending any more time at Detroit Metro Airport. We would have driven, walked, hitchhiked, whatever, to get home for Christmas Eve.) So we made it, happ after all, but exhausted from visiting an enormous city in what turned out to be one and a half days.
We had beautiful weather while there, (although it was a little cold), and got a great introduction to a great city. But we were really happy to wake up in our own bed yesterday, make arrangements for and carry out our own holiday traditions, and spend time with our families. That's what Christmas is really all about, and I wish each and every one of you a pleasant day today with your families (and your banjos!)

Oh no, Kevin, what a shame you only had a day and a half! I did wonder whether your replacement flight would go, given the news about weather in the eastern US. Good to hear that you made the most of that fabulous city given the circumstances. Merry Christmas once again! M

Thanks Maria. We did give it the old college try, though. And overall, we were glad to go. Check out some of our photos in my NYC Winter photo directory!
I wish you a very happy New Year!
