What is it with lawn mowers these days? You can hardly find a stripped down basic lawn mower anywhere. I have used the same 3 hp 22 inch "regular" mower for 22 years now. Every once in awhile I get the urge to buy a new one but when I see them, I change my mind and fix mine. The new ones all seem to have bells and whistles that I have no desire to have. Auto drive, mulch, blade clutches, electric start, and here's the worst one, large engines. Heck, when I was a kid I had a 20" with a 1 1/2 hp on it that worked just fine. The new ones are 5.5, 6.5, and even 7 hp ! I used to have a riding mower with a 5 hp ! But with all the unnecessary "stuff" these new mowers have, they NEED that much hp. And boy are they heavy ! Some weigh over 100 lbs.! My yard has several areas that require me to push the mower forward, then pull it back. Now tell me, just how do you do this with an auto drive? You either push it and pull it with the drive off, which requires a huge amount of effort (ever try steering a car with power steering when the power steering doesn't work?), or powering forward, then disengaging, then pulling back with a huge amount of effort. I'd have to do this hundreds of times in my yard. Mowing under bushes and then backing out, and mowing down a small bank (2 feet) to a creek and pulling back UP the small bank. I bet if I had one of the new mowers, I would spend twice the time, use twice the gas, and be twice as exhausted when I got done as with my "regular" 40 lb. mower.
