So Fun To Learn New Songs!

Posted by arcticpoppy on Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Alright, so I'm not the quickest, but I sure am having fun learning new songs.  I wake up each morning with tunes bounding around inside my head!  In our weekly jams, I'm still mainly playing rhythm guitar because my banjo abilities on almost every song I know just aren't up to speed -- literally.  But, I can get the chords out...just nothing interesting.  Is this how other "Just Startin'" folks feel?

I just used the Jukebox part of BHO right now -- it is REALLY really really really helping me as I have to sit down and do some laborious paperwork this morning.  Not such a good day for me, some work-related things have me bummed, so how wonderful to hear the banjo.

I get to go to the Portland Old Time Music Gathering in January!  It will be my first festival (with instruments) so that's kind of exciting -- not knowing exactly what to expect and really looking forward to new songs, over-the-top fun with old songs, etc.

Peace to all....

Hi Nancy,

I live in Portland and will be at the POTMG. I'll try to look for you there. If you have questions about POTMG in the mean time, let me know and I'll try to help answer them.

Cheers, Scott

Hi Scott! Thanks for the note, and yes, let's try to meet at the POTMG. I am traveling with a young and outrageous fiddler; we are going to have sooo much fun! Will you be at the Wed. night pre-celebration so we could meet you there? We actually get to come early to do a bit of looking around the Willamette Valley before the music starts -- I lived in Corvallis for 6 years and look forward to going for an early morning walk along Mary's Creek earlier in the week. Yep, love that place. And, I already do have a question -- have you been to POTMG before? Tell me, tell me :)

You can always play rhythm banjo to get a little more feel for playing your banjo in a jam. Then you could always throw in a lick or two if you get the urge. Just a thought!

Thanks for the thought, PruchaLegend. When I did play rhythm banjo during one jam, it was so much fun. I was amazed how I started hearing notes come from it that sounded suspiciously like tunes :) I know I should do that more often....

All you lucky folks that get to go to POTMG. I am only 4 hours a way but just never seem to be able to make it. Work, family, etc. Maybe in a couple of years. Promise me that you all will keep going every year. Dave T.
