Seems that most folks here teach the "whatever suits you best" way. And one commonly advice is "learn with the other too, so when you usual finger have a broken nail you're still able to play.
I use the index too, no matter what I do I can't seem to use the middle finger.
Anyway, there's a lots of folks here who would be of a far more greater help than me.
Or simply do a search in the Old-Time Forum!

I agree with haiku--do what feels best here at the front end. You may change around as you decide on a more specific style. I wouldn't let it hold you up.
