Gittin' Started...Choosing a Finger?

Posted by nrvstorm on Friday, March 9, 2007

Now that I've got my plastic banjo and my book I can git started. I'm still trying to decide on which finger to use for my strumming. Any thoughts?? It seems more of a comfortable hand position for me to use my index but many folks seem to suggest the middle finger. What are the advantages or disadvantages? Thanks for your help!

Seems that most folks here teach the "whatever suits you best" way. And one commonly advice is "learn with the other too, so when you usual finger have a broken nail you're still able to play.
I use the index too, no matter what I do I can't seem to use the middle finger.
Anyway, there's a lots of folks here who would be of a far more greater help than me.
Or simply do a search in the Old-Time Forum!

Thanks! I'll search around...and keep trying both fingers.

Welcome, Norman!  I grew up in "Near Detroit."  ;-)

I agree with haiku--do what feels best here at the front end.  You may change around as you decide on a more specific style.  I wouldn't let it hold you up.

Piano techs are some of my favorite people!  I wonder if you have an opinion about a blog entry I did a few weeks ago:
