I just returned from a few days of relaxation in a beautiful area known as the Whiteshell. It is only about an hour from my city and is simply stunning. We stayed in a very cozy cabin along one of the many lakes. Yesterday we decided to take a nice hike into the woods on an 9km trail through Pine forest and tundra. The trail was so cool with many elavations and views. It took us passed some roaring rapids and waterfalls, that I intend on returning to in the summer to shoot. This trail was one of the best I`ve been on. On our return loop, the trail heads down a more easy, wide gravel, almost road, and as we started up a small hill I said to my gal, "this will be a good spot to see some wildlife, watch way ahead" when all of a sudden as we crested the small hill, sure enough there was an animal on the trail ahead of us. It was just far enough away and moving away just fast enough, so that it was hard to know what it was. I said a deer, she said no it was a dog or coyote. I was like noway I think it was just a deer, I saw it`s whit tail as it left the trail into the meadow. We kept walking, not paying much attention. We came to a wide clearing and observed an area of tall grass all pushed down where animals gather to bed down, and then afew meters ahead of that I said, "this is where the deer ran in" as I said that we say two animals very close move in the tall grass. Well they were not deer. Two wolves only meteres away, one was the well known grey color and the other much more white with redish colorings. We stopped in our tracks and started to back away out of sight and the white wolf stopped, turned and looked me straight in the eyes! We both stood for a second and then we ran. Not the best thing to do but we did, all the while looking behind expecting to see them in persuit, but they never came and we made it back to a rest/safety shack. We waited 15 or so minutes, armed ourselves with some good size clubs, and a knife I had, and decided we need to keep moving ahead. They were in between us and the last 1km of trail to our van. It was scary to say the least. We made alot of noise and as we slowly walked up to the point we had run into the wolves, could not see them. We kept walking, cautiously and soon saw that their tracks were moving ahead of us on the trail in the same direction. We followed the tracks, keeping our eyes peeled for along time and then they finaly left the trail into another clearing. The last part of the hike was more dense forest and we kept our wits about us until we made it to the van. Whew!! That was so cool, kinda scary but sooo coool!! I stared into the eyes of a wolf.

I think I would have been very edgy and looking for more than a pocket knife on my next hike! Great story.
Our wolves are kinda scaley down here, we call them alligators.
