An Introduction

Posted by MarkRough on Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Seems to me that after lurking for a month or so and now making a few posts here and there, I have neglected to introduce myself.

So. . . my name is Mark.  I live down (or up depending on where you are) in Charlottesville Virginia, but grew up in northeastern Vermont.  I've never lived in town, always out in the sticks, and would probably die of noise pollution if I ever tried.  I've been frailing for about a decade on and off, but playing music my whole life.  I play an old Harmony with a bakelite pot that my dad gave me years ago.  Fortunately, or not, depending on how you feel about banjo duets, my wife decided to start playing so I picked up a used Deering Goodtime open back as well.  I'd really like to get something a bit more up scale but she's getting her PhD and we're dead broke for the next few years.

I also play Irish traditional music on wooden flute, but that's another story for another place and time.  I raise chickens, grow a lot of food, keep bees and teach second grade when I'm not playing banjo.  But the banjo is usually on my mind during all the rest.  I'm actually sitting at work at the moment while a student teacher is teaching math and wondering if  I'm really quiet if I could get away with practicing Hangman's Reel.   I keep a little Hohner travel crap-jo at school for occasions like this, but it probably wouldn't be a good idea.

Anyway. . . yup.  .  . that's me.

Glad to meet you Mark, I have a son named the same.
Thanks for the kind words in my weight loss thread.
I'm also a country boy but not originally though. My parents were from Philly and close NJ area.I have lived in the country since I was eight. Spent a short time in a small town in NH with my first wife but have tried to spend every minute I could living in the country since.
Glad to have you on the hangout, Paul

Welcome to the Hangout, Mark. My son and daughter in law also live in Charlottesville, and they are both teachers "ouside of town." He teaches 7th. grade; she teaches 8th. He's also a banjo picker.

I enjoyed reading your bio.
