IBMA Banjo Greats: Does Steve Martin Deserve to Be On the List?

Posted by myork1 on Sunday, August 23, 2009

Not sure if you've noticed, but there's some lively discussion going on about BANJOS/Banjo Players, especially when it comes to IBMA's list of nominees for MVP this year.

I just responded to a post that questioned why Steve Martin should even be on the list with some big-time bluegrass banjo legends. Here's just a portion of that discussion for anyone who hasn't seen it or weighed in with your vote/opinion.

The cool thing for me is to see how some big momentum and positive perception is being created in the marketplace/community for the banjo/bluegrass. Steve Martin's CD is the top selling CD on in several categories including Country, Bluegrass, Miscellaneous (all) music, and Comedy.

Now he's touring with Steep Canyon Rangers and exposing even more of that positive image for Bluegrass/Banjo to a whole new audience/generation attracted by his "non-banjo" celebrity.

Congrats to all the nominees on a list that's just too short to include all the amazing players in our game.

I think steve is doing some real good for the music, as far as bringing new folks in that would other wise never give a banjo a second chance. But that being said, My feeling is pretty simple. If they want to nominate him on celebrity status then so be it . He is a good banjo player and has his own style wich is great but is he on the same level as other well known pickers???? not my decision thank god. Not mad but maybe just bitter because I wasnt nominated HAHAHAHAHAHAH LOLOLOLOL <<<<< that was a serious joke :)

I hear you. :)

I think it's amazing that he could even make a list like that one. Sure he does too...Keep going, never know when you could get YOUR nomination...Martin's like 62 or something I think. :)

Hey, how do you like your PRICE CASE?
