Paths are crossing but it's good

Posted by meritcooper on Tuesday, July 7, 2009

Well, I have been on a clawhammer journey so I haven't really touched the bluegrass stuff much in the past year. I got an awesome opportunity to play for my church. Come to find out, they love banjo. Woohoo! They put me on the spot and wanted me to play a few songs with the piano. I had to think fast. Bluegrass is the best choice since I could roll in mostly any chord they throw at me. So, bluegrass it was. Since it was the first time I have played in public and with another instrument, I chose to keep it simple and just roll mostly and throw only a few licks in.

It turned out great. This Sunday, we started the service with God Bless America. The pianoist kept all three songs in G for me so I would be totally comfortable. We played that a few times. I came back up after all the singing was done and played with the piano for the communion and offering. We did slow songs so my rolling fit in well. We did There is a Fountain and Because He Lives. Everybody loved it. They kept thanking me. Isn't that funny? I kept thanking them for letting me play. So, it all worked out. They are wanting to incorporate my banjo as much as I will do it. I am good with that. They also like my clawhammer so maybe I can find a way to work different styles in.

Our church has an electric drum set that is played very softly from time to time. That is okay because I have an electric banjo as well. :) Sometimes we have a guitar player. I look forward to the day that we all play at the same time. I go to an Antioch Christian Church.

Playing is church is always a blessing for me. As enthusiastic as we musicians may be, there will always be those few who resent any music in church other than what is traditional; I pray they will just get over it. I am glad that you had the opportunity to do this and that you will have more in the future!

Now I know my new BHO friend is Christian and plays in church as well. Double blessings.

3 years later, I have found my way to a Pentecostal church (as you may can tell). I guess the Lord leads you where you are needed. :)
