49th Annual Bill Monroe Bluegrass Festival (Bean Blossom Ind)

Posted by dgill on Sunday, June 21, 2009

My wife and best friend went up to Bean Blossom with me on Saturday and listen to some great music and met some great people.  One of my memories will be of meeting Mr. Ralph Stanley and his family.  They had a Dr. Ralph Stanley custom banjo there that was simply beautiful.  I would have love to have owned it, but it was beyond my means.

I really enjoyed the Dixie Bee Liners.  I had not be exposed to their music much and the time they were on stage was a good time with good music.  I had hoped to talk with some other BHO members, as I am sure they were there, but I did not know how to go about identifying them in the crowd.

We are going to BG on The Square at Corydon In, on 6/27.  We also hope to make some time at the ROMP in Owensboro between 6/24 &  6/27.  I have heard nothing but good things about it, but have never attended.

I am still committed to learning and improving my Banjo skills, but I feel it is a journey with no end at this point.  Always learning from others and enjoying every minute of it.  I feel that as my ear gets better, my playinig gets worse.  Does that make any sense?  I think my playing is more than likely improving, but my ear now knows what the sounds and notes are supposed to sound like when played well.

Enough for now.  Best wishes to you and all your family and friends.

Hey Donnie,  I was there, too.  Wish I could have met you.  I went there especially to see the Bee Liners,  also I never miss a chance to see Dan Tyminski and his band.  Did you catch their show?  Dan busted a string during one of the tunes,  and they just kept going while he sang,  and changed the string while performing!   It was quite a sight!

   Good pickin always!!
