WORKSHOPS
July 12, 2009
House of Musical Traditions in Takoma Park, MD
12:00-2:00 pm -- Curly Miller & Carole Ann Rose: "Play Well With Others: Ensemble Playing"
Bring a banjo (any kind), fiddle, guitar, mandolin or whatever and learn how to join an ensemble. Should you play rhythm? Lead? How does an ensemble make an arrangement? This is not a workshop on jamming, but more about how to make your sound interface with others to create a wonderful ensemble sound. An ensemble or 2 will be formed during the workshop for "the real deal".
12:00-2:00 pm -- Adam Hurt: "Intermediate Repertoire and Technique"
Adam is a patient and amiable teacher, banjo master and versatile clawhammer banjo player. He will teach 2 tunes in 2 different tunings in his clawhammer style. Intermediate players should be familiar with basic clawhammer technique and comfortable playing a few tunes in G tuning and in double C tuning.
2:00-4:00 pm -- Cathy Fink: "Banjo For Real Beginners"
No experience required! Bring your own banjo, or try out a new Gold Tone banjo. The Gold Tones will be available at a discount after the workshop should you choose to continue. We will learn to hold and tune the banjo and learn the first steps in playing clawhammer (frailing) style.
2:00-4:00 pm -- Marcy Marxer: "Cello Banjo & Other Hybrids"
Marcy has inspired many players to enjoy the cello banjo (4 strings tuned like a cello), the banjo ukulele, tenor banjo and 6 string banjo. Come if you are curious, come if you have a "hybrid" banjo (other than 5 strings), come to learn and play or simply to observe.
Marcy will talk about techniques, tunings, musical styles and offer hands on experience if you are new to one of these delightful instruments.
All workshops will be held at HMT's lessons studios at 7008 Westmoreland Ave, Takoma Park MD.
Each workshop session is $40.00. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. To register, e-mail lessons@hmtrad.com (payment instructions will be sent to you) or call 301-270-9090 to pay with a credit card.
