Mount Airy Fiddler's Convention 2009

Posted by retiredguy on Thursday, June 11, 2009

Mount Airy Fiddler’s convention, 6/09…WoW!! I arrived on Tuesday, June 2nd, promptly backed into a post and scratched my camper. After that I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Within 10 minutes I had met friends that I will cherish forever. Two campsites over from me were two families camping together. They were Mark and Donna Buckner and Don and Paula Moore. They welcomed me into their campsite and the rest is just pure fun. They are both great musicians, Mark on fiddle and guitar, /Don on dulcimer and guitar. We picked all week. I met other great musicians and entertainers like Wayne Seymour, Fred Reynolds, Nikki Talley,  Annie Talley and others that I can’t remember their names.

Wednesday evening just before sunset, I was sitting at my campsite picking my guitar and I see this lady walking in my direction with a fiddle. I thought, “oh crap, she is going to want to play some and I don’t know what to do”. She did and I said, “Well, I’d love to but I can’t remember the words to the songs.” She said, you ought to write them out. I said I had, in my folder in the coach. She said, get it out. I did and we went from page one to page ninety-one before I crawled up the steps to go to bed at 2AM. Mark came over and joined in just after we started.

On Thursday night it rained and rained so Wayne, Fred, Mark, the fiddler girl Vance, Don and me gathered in my MH and picked for about 4 hours. What and evening. It was like being in a club with folks entertaining you. It was absolutely delightful. These people are so talented that I felt honored just to be in their presence. I wish some of it had rubbed off on me. One note, none of those guys would play rhythm, that’s all I play (guitar) so I fit right in.

Of course each day, starting Thursday we went to the stage area to watch the contending musicians and bands. Only the judges could have viewed all of them. I heard there were 150 Bluegrass bands and nearly as many Old Time Bands plus the individual talents like fiddle, dulcimer, banjo, bass and I don’t even know what else.  By the way, someone on the BHO commented that my favorite old time banjo player in the whole world, REBEKAH WEILER was there and competed and won her category. What a disappointment for me that I missed her.  There were so many great bands that it was hard to get up and walk away when it was time to eat.

I did meet one of the BHO members from the Virginia/ Carolina Ramblers, he was just coming off stage and we just spoke hurriedly because he had something else to do. I saw one other BHO shirt on a guy driving a reddish car/suv but I was so slow I could not catch up with him. I wore my shirt one day but got cold and had to cover it up.

All in all, it was a event that I will never forget. The folks that put it on did an outstanding job. It was well organized and everything seemed to come off, almost on time, without a hitch.

Wow, that sounds like a wonderful time. I's so good that you found kindred spirits right away like that. Get yourself to Clifftop and you'll get to meet Rebekah. She's a great talent and a bright, friendly soul.
