There is more than one way to pick a banjo and there is more than one technique covered under the name "clawhammer". As you say the difference is switching from an up picking motion to a down picking motion. However, that is only one way to play. Check out Chip Arnold on the BHO. He utilizes a two finger style of clawhammer (thumb and index) which uses an up picking motion, I think of it as sort of a hybrid between scruggs 3 finger picking and the standard down picking motion of clawhammer. That may interest you as well.

If you decide to go with down stroke - it does feel weird for a while. In fact, it will feel completely unnatural until it starts to feel natural. You just have to make your mind believe it's possible.

I found it to be very strange as well..For yrs the downbeat was with my thumb, all of a sudden it is now with my finger...Very odd, feels natural now and I like i9t much better...
