Clawhammer world

Posted by Dwalker1926 on Friday, May 29, 2009

I've just started leasrning the clawhammer style. I have found that the years of picking Scrugg's style have made my fingers not want to go in the down stroke direction. Is this common? I know it is tjhe forearm motion that drive the fore finger down stroke but it feels pretty weird.

There is more than one way to pick a banjo and there is more than one technique covered under the name "clawhammer".  As you say the difference is switching from an up picking motion to a down picking motion.  However, that is only one way to play.  Check out Chip Arnold on the BHO.  He utilizes a two finger style of clawhammer (thumb and index) which uses an up picking motion, I think of it as sort of a hybrid between scruggs 3 finger picking and the standard down picking motion of clawhammer.  That may interest you as well.

If you decide to go with down stroke - it does feel weird for a while.  In fact, it will feel completely unnatural until it starts to feel natural.  You just have to make your mind believe it's possible.
