Go for it, John. I tried to learn when I was 19, did not do well. I put it down until about eight years ago (47), and decided to learn by the book this time. It has been GREAT fun!

I just noticed you're in B-more. Welcome to the B-more banjo club!!!! Lots of pickers in town of ALL levels.
There's a number of places to catch a jam in town, but if you're a beginner, my favorite and I think the friendliest jam is the Baltimore Bluegrass Meetup group - http://www.meetup.com/Baltimore-Bluegrass/calendar/10380190/
They hold jam sessions not too far up the road from you in Middle River the 2nd Sunday of every month. Like I said lots of players of ALL levels and no one's embarrassed about asking to play cripple creek slowly once or twice. They've usually got two circles and you can hop back and forth and check out everyone's playing. Most folks are really friendly and anxious to talk your ear off about their instruments.
You should come check it out some time.
