A new begining

Posted by JohnB. on Tuesday, May 19, 2009

After 25 years of not playing a banjo I decided it was time to start pickin again. So I did a lot of research for the best bang for my buck and I decided to purchase a Mastercraft Bluegrass Series banjo for I thought this would be a great congrats present to myself since I quit smoking a little over a month ago. Well yesterday the men in the brown suits payed me a visit and with them was my banjo. I was up all last night trying to learn some chords and started playin around with Cripple Creek. Today I went to Appalachian Bluegrass to get all the info for lessons. I'll begin taking lessons around the first week of June, due to work has me swamped until the end of May.

Go for it, John.   I tried to learn when I was 19,  did not do well.  I put it down until about eight years ago (47),  and decided to learn by the book this time.   It has been GREAT fun!

Hey JohnB,

I just noticed you're in B-more. Welcome to the B-more banjo club!!!! Lots of pickers in town of ALL levels.

There's a number of places to catch a jam in town, but if you're a beginner, my favorite and I think the friendliest jam is the Baltimore Bluegrass Meetup group -

They hold jam sessions not too far up the road from you in Middle River the 2nd Sunday of every month. Like I said lots of players of ALL levels and no one's embarrassed about asking to play cripple creek slowly once or twice. They've usually got two circles and you can hop back and forth and check out everyone's playing. Most folks are really friendly and anxious to talk your ear off about their instruments.

You should come check it out some time.
