Many years ago while visiting the theme park Dollywood, I had an experience that I will never forget. As usual watching one of the greats play live helped me in so many ways.
Miss Dolly Parton has been a bluegrass fan all her life I guess so the chances seemed good to actually see some live banjo that hot summer day.
I was lured by the sound of a five string rolling behind a sweet fiddle taking a break and made my way toward what was indeed a band playing on a small stage up ahead.
I was thrilled to find the banjo player was none other than Larry McNealy! After a couple more songs they introduced Larry while he quietly adjusted a couple of tuners. Then it happened, the band took off catching Larry not quite ready. He plugged ahead and played the whole tune out of tune! When finished he apologized and said that he had just played thre Chinese version.
What I learned that day was real showmanship. It made a nobody like me feel good to see that even the best have bad days.Larry could have stomped off the platform.Instead he showed us how the best acts in difficult times.
