Practice

Posted by Pepper Laing on Tuesday, April 21, 2009

The last two weeks was busy, with no banjo time, things have levelled out this week and I`m back at it. Rehearsal was good last night and I`m thinking the time off was a good thing. It didn`t feel like it at the time, and when I picked up my JO for the 1st time in 11 days it felt like I could not do anything, but a half hour later it felt like I was playing better than ever! I have been working on playing softer, with a lighter touch all around and I`m finding this really helps with control and tone. Let er rip when needed!! Not all the time but for awhile in my practice I try to play like there is a baby sleeping in the room.  I can`t wait for our show this Saturday, it will be our 1st with our new and improved Mandolin player, except for the radio show we did a few weeks ago that is.  The floods are still in full swing and the Mighty Red River is reaking havoc, safe and dry where I`am. The river has grown to 22 kilometers wide!!

I know what you went through after the lay-off of playing. I had 2 two week vacations this year and after both of them, I felt that I could play just as well, if not better, than I could 2 weeks before. I think that the finger memory kicks in while you don't have to concentrate on the actual picking. It is almost like typing. Best to you. Harold Wren, Edison, Ohio
