Last week I went Spring Turkey hunting with my dad on public land in the Gila National Forest. We had a great time, but neither of us were fortunate enough to bag a bird. I truelly think it is a wonder that anyone ever gets birds at all in the places that I've hunted. I've hunted Merriam's sub-species turkies in New Mexico and since I began have only been able to get one bird. We began hunting in the Jicarilla Mountains near Carrizoso New Mexico and though there are birds in there, the populations of flocks can be small and spread further apart than in the Gila. My dad and I are self-taught so it has taken us quite a while to become somewhat proficient.
This was the first turkey season that I brought a banjo. My dad was enchanted with "Squirrel Heads and Gravy". My biggest crowd pleaser "Cluck Old Hen" was also well recieved. If you look in my photos I am going to up load a picture my dad took of me playing by the fire.
