small steps

Posted by robin jones on Monday, April 6, 2009

As I attempt to climb back on the banjo-beam, I'm amazed at how hard it is to reacquire old, positive habits. When I'm in the groove, everything seems easy and natural. But getting back in shape after even a short hiatus is mind numbingly difficult.

So it's baby steps for me. I'm going to dedicate at least half of my practice time each day to the banjo. A couple weeks of hard, regimented practice should restore me to where I was at the start of the year. I'm ready to go. I just want to make sure I'm going in the right direction. A planned path is the ticket I think.

I did do a couple smart things. First I kept a list of all the tunes I know, or rather knew, in my banjo case. Two, I tabbed out all the Scruggs stuff I learned from side one of The Essential Earl Scruggs. Of course I have all the single string stuff Randal sent me. That's a little tricky to get up to speed on and will take most of my time.

Anyway, I'm back in black and blue.

A planned path is the only way to know where you have been, where you are going, and most importantly how to get there!

Yeah Robin, even a WEEK is too long for me to slack off nowdays. I have to play all the time to remain at a status where Im totally happy with my playin. You gotta remember man , we're "late 40's". Dont know about you , but my RH has changed a little.Retaining new tunes into muscle memory takes a wee bit longer. Im alittle more forgiving of myself for not being able to play Hot Burrito BD at 150 just gettin it outta the case.LOL.I like your attitude about the regimented practice, but wonder if it really should be on a time table? I think your Single String playin is smooth and I know it takes alot of "playin time" to keep it that way.Just make sure your learnin NEW tunes that really keep your interest up and make it fun along the way.Yeah , the list is a good way to track what ya need to know for specific jams and keeps track of new techniques, keys, and phrasings you encounter. Enjoy the journey! (I know easier said than done).LOL
