Sounds like you do with a couple of lessons from a good tutor. Someone who can point out what you are doing well and shine a light in the direction of what you're not.

Annette,
I thought that I was the only one who could spell "aaaarrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhh."
I too am a new player and get frustrated. Don't you give up! Hang in there, keep at it. Think positive and you will overcome. And the day you have a "leap" you'll be doing the Rocky Balboa dance. It's out there keep practicing.

I know the feeling. Are you able to rip your CD onto your computer then use some sort of program such as Audacity to slow it down to around 65BPM and try playing along with that. Then when you can do that without wanting to throw the banjo across the room try bumping the BPM up a tiny bit
I know that I get jumble fingers and can't do anything right if I try and play along to my teachers recording he's done at a 'medium' pace.

I'm with Kip (again) audacity is a terrific tool for slowing things down while maintaining pitch. AS I move away from tab it's been a huge help to me.
