well, the more I practise the banjo ( yes I have been practising for three days on end now LOL) The more I know..I don t know nothing about banjo playing!
but it is soooo much fun, and today I actually went to the store and got myself a set of fingerpicks..before I started my attempts on the banjo ( wouldnt quite call it playing yet) I thought that, being a guitarist, maybe I should try the clawhammer style because I am so used to using all my fingers ( was taught to play fingerpicking classical style on the guitar)and it would be difficult to play with thumb and two fingers so clawhammer might be a better choice
but when I wanted to get started on the banjo I looked on youtube, and on the internet for online lessons and found some tabs and youtubefilms that were helpfull but all of them are picking it.
so that s what I started doing I had to start somewhere after all.., been doing it without picks and was making some progress but used four fingers all the time and because it was so much fun and so addictive I actually played a blister on my middlefinger haha ( no smart comments on the middlefinger please haha..heard them all from my husband today!!!)
so i thought it might be better to get picks, although I was almost sure I would never succesfully use those
I was amazed at what happened, when I came home with them and tried them on ( after some bending I finally found a way to comfortably fit them on my thumb and two fingers) at first it was horrible,..as if I was suddenly blinded, couldn t feel what I was doing. but after some practise I actually managed to play some tunes
I ve been playing john hardy, old joe clark, will the circle be unbroken and rolling in my sweet baby s arms ( all easy tabs ofcourse) but my rolls arent half bad for a rooky. but the more I play the more I see how hard it is...being a musician I know there are more possibilities to these songs, solo's ,..hammer on..slides etc..but my hands wont do what my ears can allready hear haha
it is so much fun though and as addictive as playing the guitar has allways been to me.
I actually managed to play some rolls in a song my band perfoms and it was great to do that! even if I am a total NOTHING on the field of banjo playing..no arrogance here haha..I KNOW I must have about 100 years to go before getting anywhere near being a decent player, but again..SUCH FUN!!!!

Clawhammer doesn't get as much press as three finger style, but has a really cool sound, so if your still interested check out Patrick Costello on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo0cy0REMY8 . This firs video talks a little about frailing. Patrick gets mixed reviews because he has strong opinions about how folk music should be passed from person to person, but I really like his stuff even though I play three finger myself. Good luck on your journey, it sounds like your off to a really good start and welcome to the hangout.
