First Encounters of the Fretless Kind

Posted by Stev187 on Thursday, February 1, 2007

Well, this is night 3 with the fretless banjo.  I haven't had too many opportunities to play it.  For one thing, the larger pot makes it pretty darn loud, so I can't play after everyone goes to bed.  I haven't stuffed the head yet, and I may not.

I put the Renaissance head on after painting the inside a bit (see pics).  Now I see what the fuss is all about.  That's a fantastic sound!  I can tell that this is the head for the banjo, hands down.

I tuned the fretless to open D and messed around with a few tunes.  I even made one tape to document my initial skill level.  I've posted two tunes, "Rockingham Cindy" and "Barlow Knife."  They sound better on the tape than they felt when I was playing.

While I was playing, I felt inept and out of tune.  The recordings aren't so bad, though.  Intonation is rough in spots, and you can tell that I don't know the instrument.  Also, I think I rush both the tunes.

I am going to post to the "Sound Off" thread to get some reaction to the two tracks.
