Why Should I Feel Guilty For Owning A Gibson?

Posted by blamethebanjo on Wednesday, January 31, 2007

I recently replied to a post by a very nice newcomer who ask for opinions about buying a banjo. Now I havn't been a regular here for very long myself but I have played music all my life.I have also had a ton of different instruments made by lots of different companies.Everything was humming along just fine until a feller said Stelling was a better banjo than Gibson.I know thousands feel that way, but I stood up for my choice.Nobody got upset with the Stelling pusher but man did I catch it! I even had one special poster who disected my entry and elaborated fully on all the areas of my stupidity.I heard it all.I am sure you have too. Here is my point.Don't assume that anyone who disagrees with you must be a fool or a commie or something else horrible.

One guy said I badmouthed Stelling on a Stelling Thread. The first post mentioned Gibson so I told my story on what was not a Stelling thread by any means.

Tempers flared and Gibson haters came out of the woodwork. Some acting childish, calling names doing exactly what they accused me of.The moral of the story seems to be if you ain't got something good to say ...well you know the rest. I love all banjos.Even no name cheapies.I really like my Gibson too.         I'm sorry,I just do.

Darrell , I owned them both and like them both the stelling is very bright and easy to play, the gibson is very powerful and bassey right now I would hate to make a choise between the two. but still I just like banjos deerings ,Huber s and gold stars, and I really think the recording King has got it going. I installed spikes today in a new Rteo4 which is a very good banjo so don't let the junk get to you , thats what a lot of folk do they just try to make people mad.

I love my Gibson and I'm not ashamed to say it. It doesn't make me stuck up or anything. I have some starter banjos that I still play and they have character but I have never been able to find that sound on any other banjo I have played in the stores or during jams with others.

I don't get into all of the politcs involved with this debate - the way I think about it is it's my banjo so that's what I'll play and whoever else can play whatever they want and I'd love to try theirs out if they ask me to play it and they can play mine if they want to try it and see what they think.

People have been kicking the Gibson Banjo around here for years, if not for one thing it's for another. It started back when a member said that the "Gold Tone" banjo was better than Gibsons.

Don't let it get you down, just look at the names that turn up on the Gibson "Bashing" and you'll see the same names time and time again...AND if you see a new name, it will most likely be a "puppet" account so as not to soil their other users name.

I see it as the little dogs nipping at the heals of the big dog.

Banjoman,banjo25& Oldman, You all are right and I just need to try to not be offended as if it is directed at me.One guy made the comment that most of the pros use Huber banjos,is that true? Not that it makes any difference to me.I'll stay with Gibson.I love the sound, the look & the history. It reminds me of all the Japanese V-twin motorcycles that are Harley look a likes. It just ain't the same.I have owned both and my heart goes for that low thump only Harley has.Being a legend means a lot.Kind of like Earl.Legendary!!
