Yup! I once (arrogantly) called someone a whiner (on a bad day) and got thoroughly spanked in the next 4 - 5 responses. I deserved it, too. I did apologize and have thought out my responses to questions in a more mature (I hope) manner since. I have been playing for more than 50 years and sometimes I catch my ego rearing up when it doesn't need to be there.

My 2 CENTS...there are arrogant people everyware....and sometimes I have been called arrogant on certain topics. For me, Pat Costellos web site and daily online free lessons have helped me a lot..actually more then anything else to where I can stand up in front of 100plus people and play/sing and have the audience really enjoy it. I guess he is teaching what I need to know in a style I can understand.

Hello all. Wow, I caused a pretty big rukus here. I'm Mark, who sent the note to Patrick. Let me clarify my feelings. There does appear to be some great banjo talent on Banjo Hangout, and I like the site overall. I didn't have any arrogance directly to me, or any of my questions, but just saw some when reading through the forums. Mainly, someone would come on, and say they were a newbie, and ask a simple question. Good answers would come, along with a lot of lingo and technical terms, which would not do the newbie a lot of good. My comment was mainly seeing this in contrast to what I have seen Patrick present, in a very friendly, "just have fun" way. Sorry if this hurt anyone's feeling, that was not the intent. It just seems some folks (not only on this forum), just answer questions to show what they know, not to help. Anyway, I mainly wanted to let everyone know that Patrick did not fabricate this. It came from me, and is only my single opinion. Thanks. Mark

"I (unfortunately), started my research into clawhammer banjo on BanjoHangout.com. At first I though, “Great, people I can learn from”. In reality, what I got was a bunch of arrogant folks talking about how hard banjo is, and will take years to play, and memorize this and that."
I read your former posts and the responses you got seemed polite and helpful. Why not stick around and give things a chance. There are lots of beginners on this list as well as lots who have been playing a long time. Oldwoodchuck responded to a post of yours with helpful advice and he's been doing that for beginners for a long time. And posting free video helps for beginners as well.
PC's "very friendly, "just have fun" way" never appears on the internet lists. His behavior has caused most HO members as well as the members of other internet groups to want no part of him. That's why he's been locked out of this and other lists. So please don't judge the people here too harshly on the subject of PC until you read some of his tirades on old threads.
Stick around. Come to Clifftop and we'll pick.

I've just checked mtracy's posts. There is only one in the Clawhammer and Old Time forum and it comes late in the thread. After that post there are only three replies and 2 of them are by me. The third is a person asking a question about one of my replies. Does that mean I'm the "bunch of arrogant folks talking about how hard the banjo is, and will take years.... etc?"

While I now have evidence that PC did not write the comment himself - I'll stick with the second part of my original statement

I know Pat was banned from Banjo Hangout a few years back (due to repeated incredibly rude and inflammatory posts) -- but then he was back a few months ago. Does he still have an active account here? Was he banned again?
I think he was permanently banned from Banjo-L, too, for the same reason.
But all the rest of us are the arrogant ones. Funny, that.

See, the comedy here is that "rude" is a matter of perspective.
Let's be honest here and tell everybody what is reall going on.
I am a professional musician. I hve literally dedicated my life to my chosen craft.
You, Brian Conklin, Chip Arnold, Glenn Godsey and the other people attacking me can barley play at a beginner level.
That is not a flame or a brag. That is a fact. You can't play. the only thing you can do with a banjo is hold it - and even that gets screwed up half the time..
In every heated debate that broke out one of you inexperienced players were trying to push something that was false onto other beginners in a vain attempt to boost your egos. When I pointed out that you were wrong you freaked out.
Look through the archives. In every case it's me being attacked by somebody viciously defending an indefensible and baseless opinion.
When somebody with my background gets cursed - and it always took on the constant pertering and hectoring kind of attack you see in this thread - by somebody who cannot even play at a beginners level it's only natural for the experience player to throw his or her arms up in the air and say, "You're an idiot" to the idiot in question.
Is it rude to call an idiot an idiot? I think it's only as rude as somebody handing out bad information or attacking somebodies character in a locked forum.
Look around, folks. I have brought the banjo & the guitar to people all around the freaking world. I have friends, students and customers everywhere. The only people who hate me are a group of people who can't play - but spend a lot of time pretending to play in forum.
Have fun with your hate-fest. When it's all over I'll still be teaching thousands of people a day and the forum dwellers here still won't be able to do anything but talk about playing.

What exactly did you people expect to gain from this thread? I know Paul is always looking to hurt me for some twisted and unknown reason - and like a truly evil person he always claims that he starts garbage like this out of public interest - but how is attacking the single most successful old time banjo player in the last twenty years prove to people that you are not a group of mean and arrogant people?

Patrick, You're just absolutely incredible. The truth is that you do indeed give away a lot of good information, lessons, etc. You certainly have more energy than I do. As near as I can tell you deliver what you seem to promise to your students. At least those students who post here think so. I don't think your teaching is the best way to start folks who may want to continue on into a more melodic approach to clawhammer. Because of that I'll always steer beginners toward Dan Levenson, Tony Spadaro, R.D. Lunsford, Ken Perlman, etc. I have heard you play and I think what you do is just fine. It's not how I like to play but that's just fine too, Patrick.
Your rude, childish and derogatory outbursts are another thing altogether. As for myself, I wish you'd stuff a sock in it.

The problem, Pat, is that you are not allowed to call someone an idiot on this web site. That kind of talk is what inevitably gets you locked out, and what makes many people reluctant to even want to engage you in conversation. Nobody in this thread has attacked your music. Even you critics have, in many cases, complimented your music and teaching. You, on the other hand, use name calling and personal attacks as your prime tactic. And when someone offered a very polite dissenting viewpoint in the comments to your blog, it mysteriously disappeared in short time. Glenn Godsey has not even participated in this discussion. Why are you attacking him?

Down here at MY skill level, maybe I'm too easily impressed.
However, the statement "Chip, you can't play" intrigued me. So I listened to one of Chip's music files.
If he can't play, then whomever he bribed to post "A Gift to Be Simple" for him, seems to know how to play.
In an effort to be fair, I'll go listen to a Pat Costello rendition of some tune with which I am familiar, and see if it is also recognizable and enjoyable.
I do not worship any particulkar style; I just like banjo in general.
Maybe my attitude is too casual, but I have seen da
ed little of what I would consider arrogance from the other persons on posts throughout the Hangout.
I can understand how a person who has made a serious business of banjo, might not appreciate what are perceived as attacks upon himself and/or his chosen profession.
However, I have also learned that perception is more imporant than raw information. We may perceive as insults, statements which are not insults; and we may perceive things as being worth fighting about, which are not worth fighting about.
From my own personal history, enforcing the Building and Zoning codes for Our Fair City, I actually got two phone calls, just a few days apart, from persons of two obviously different skin varieties. And each of them SINCERELYaccused me of showing favoritism to persons not of HIS particular shade.
Obviously, at least ONE of them had to be wrong, although I took the sum of the two calls as proof that I was equally enforcing the Codes.
Next time somebody does something arrogant, would you guys & gals alert me by e-mail, so I can see it fresh and alive and in context?
And I thank you, I do.

I am relatively new to banjo playing, but I would never take a lesson from someone who calls anyone on the Banjo Hangout names. I know my playing is far from stellar. I visit the hangout to seek advice, help, assistance and good humor. Along the way, I've met many wonderful people who I now consider my friends.
Many of the Banjo Hangout members that Mr. Costello chooses to flame and riducule are people who have been very helpful to me in the learning process.
Perhaps it is time to stop this thread....it is a waste of my time to read the posts.
Personally, Mr. Costello, I suggest you chill out dude! You'll live longer!

I would like to know why wormpicker felt the need to start this thread at all? I read Pat's blog every day, he always has good advise and his love of folk music is evident. He wants to to teach people to play folk music, not necessarily banjo music.
I have little talent, but I love folk music; and reading Patricks books and watching the folk song of the day helps me, gives me hope that one day I can play folk music.
Before all of you judge him, go watch his folk song of the day, go ahead look thru his archives and then tell me he is the deamon you all think his is. Tell me how many of you are willing to stoop down to my level and help me out?
Reading some of the comments you all made, you should be ashamed of yourself. ![]()

wormpicker - Posted - 07/18/2007: 20:23:55
Luke, I started the thread because I read this viewpoint that was 180 degrees counter to everything I have observed about the clawhammer forum, and I guess I was curious if others ever observed anything resembling what the person making the quote observed. I posted it in the clawhammer forum, and it was subsequently moved by a moderator to this forum. I gave the link and source of the quote because that is the fair and proper thing to do when you quote someone making a controversial statement. I SPECIFICALLY said that I did not want this thread to be a discussion of Pat, and I repeatedly urged people not to discuss Pat, and admonished people who did. I happen TO OWN Pat's book. I BOUGHT IT through Amazon. I have watched and even downloaded several of his videos. I have NEVER uttered a critical word about Patrick's music or teaching. Today I had a nice off-line conversation with Mark, the person who made the original comments on Pat's blog. I told Mark that I agreed that Pat is a great musician and a great teacher. In a past thread that turned in the same direction as this one, I tried to engage Pat in a polite civil conversation as to why I thought people in the forums seemed to turn away from him (basically, because of the verbal abuse he resorts to, as he has here). He would hear none of what I had to say. He told me that "It's a lot more fun just to say something outrageous and use the resulting hubbubas free advertising." He made a similar comment in his own blog today. So please don't accuse me of judging Patrick. If you want to understand the hostility and animosity that many people here have toward Patrick, I suggest you search out some of the previous threads in the archives. Some, I think, have disappeared, but there are enough remaining for you to draw an accurate conclusion for yourself. As to others in this thread being ashamed of what they've said, maybe you should reread their comments. Most of the comments on his music and teaching methods were criticisms, not personal attacks. And most of those were offered along with genuine compliments. In my opinion, the criticisms some people made about Patrick's behavior were fully justified by what he showed us today.

When it comes to success stop and realize that I have, like me or not, managed to create an entire new market for teaching frailing banjo. That's after starting my own publishing company - and that little publishing company has managed to put out a book that is outselling everything else on old time banjo while a free version of the book circulates the Internet.
We didn't buy advertising, we didn't suck up and we didn't sell out. None of the music magazines gave us the time of day, the forums made every effort to drag my name in the mud and Dear Old Dad and I still managed to pull it off.
The great thing is that we're just starting. I am putting myself out under the same open-source license that I used to release my books online so that I can offer free workshops across the country and around the world.
So yeah, I'm pretty freaking successful. This half-deaf, uneducated epileptic is kicking major boo-tay and helping people around the world.
To top it off, I even drive a cool car. Praise Jesus!
I'm off to go help people, do nice things and make money. You folks can continue to talk amongst yourselves.

What you see depends on
where you stand,
and what you're looking for.
I can't fault a person whose book is outselling the second-best book,
if he claims to be a sucessful author. That's not arrogance, that's quantifiable data.
If the book is about banjo playing, then it is, from a certain viewpoint, it does indicate that he is a successful banjo player.
Some of the Outhangers are looking for instances of arrogance,
on the part of Mr. Costello, and find it.
And Mr. Costello seeks instances of arrogance from some Outhangers,
with similar results.
Much as I love to make smardastical comments, this thread no longer inspires me.

I guess it's foolish to expect things to change, but every time he pops back in I hope for an amicable exchange of ideas.
It makes me think that he intentionally sabotages his membership so that he doesn't have to defend his ideas in an honest and polite dialogue. I don't know why someone would do this, especially considering that he could only gain students by defending his material in a civil manner.
Oh well. Silly me for hoping things could be different.
And I just want to go on the record and say that Chip Arnold's playing is beautiful. I just listened to Baptist Shout on his homepage. Man! If that's bad banjo playing, we could use some more of it!
