He's also an excellent guitar player. If you care to meet him. He is a fixture at the southern california folk festival. "CTMS Solstice Festival" His guitar playing is reminiscent of that of "Blind Lemon Jefferson" He doesn't say much be he can play the stuffings out of those instruments>

I love that thumpy sound. Anybody know what the purpose of the wide spot in the neck is? I kind of guess it is for playing over the neck. It makes me want to try my hand at building a banjo, not that I am that kind of craftsman, but I do like self sufficiency. I've got a calf that I am not sure is going to make it so I might have a skin available.

Thanks everybody for the compliments. Clodhopper, that bulbous part of the neck on my banjo is purely decorative and serves no musical or structural function whatsoever. (You can't see it on the video too well but it has brass inlay on it -- the four playing card suits.)The scale of the banjo is so long that the part of the bulge nearest the nut is only the equivalent of the 10th fret or so. I hardly ever play over the neck, especially on that banjo. I usually keep my hand over the head near the rim.

I continue to be wonderfully impressed by your videos. I hope you will post more. I spent some time with your "Mixed Blues" video last night, attempting to play along. So, are you up-picking all the melody notes on that piece with your middle finger, and brushing with your index? I don't suppose you have tab for any of your pieces do you?

Interesting in light of the current "inexpensive banjos" thread that the banjo he's playing on the Pateroller Song seems to be an Asian aluminum pot. Sounds good to me!

John, on "Mixed Blues" I am up-picking most of the notes with my middle finger on the first string. I might occasionally use the index too. The notes that are up-picked on the second and third strings (there aren't too many) are with the index. I brush down mostly with the middle finger. I've read that Dock did it very logically, brushing with middle if he was picking with index, and vice versa, but I pretty much always do it with either the middle or both together. I don't have tab for much -- I've done it for a couple of guitar things mostly, but I like to teach just by showing things and having people repeat them.
And Chip -- the banjo on "Pateroller" is a 1926 Vega Tubaphone with a skin head, not an Asian aluminum pot. Not that there aren't good cheap banjos around, but aluminum doesn't sound all that promising to me. The more wood involved, the better, IMHO.

Yup, it sounded awful good. Looking at the edge of the pot in the flange area it looked like one of those alum ones with the little bumps that the hooks go through. I guess I was just seeing the shoes in a kinda blurry image. In any case, you sounded great and I like the up-picking you're doing. Welcome to the hangout.
