Given that so much music is derivative, I’ve heard that Ralph Stanley’s tune was the same, or similar to an old time tune that predated it.
Anyone know what tune that was?

You do the comparison.

Very cool and interesting Carl. Any idea of the timeframe of the Pretty Little Dog version?

Among similar tunes, Lonesome John stands out to me as Ralph’s source for the Backstep—so close it could be simply a version of the tune. Stanley tweaked number of traditional tunes and retitled them.

Here’s a 2F rendition of Salyer’s Lonesome John. Not too far from Pretty Little Dog.

Thanks for the links!
Lonesome John sounds close enough that you might ascribe it to be regional/stylistic difference. I’m more of a BG player but I actually prefer the more stately tempo of these examples.

Well that's the thing about all these mUddle tunes/scale, they use the same notes! Yep, all three tunes variations of one another.
Now are "variations" derived from fiddlers with questionable (drunk, maybe) memories? Ha! banjered

In this thread from 2019 there are some discussion about Clinch Mountain Backstep: banjohangout.org/archive/352781. The tune seems to come from Hiram Stamper who gave it to his son Art who was fiddler at Stanley Brothers.

It was collected from Lee in the early 1970s and is on a Fuzzy Mountain recording. Lee made up the tune while hearing another tune from Doc White.

“Young Edward” is an old Scots ballad. Give a listen—especially to the whistle part at the end. Different time signature, but food for thought.
