Hi all,
Hope this is the right topic to point under, let me know if this discussion should be housed elsewhere. Came across this duo from Durham, NC the other day. Turns out on Friday they dropped the version of 'Blackest Crow' they do live. Two incredible voices and a banjo to boot. Seems like it might've flown under the radar so far, figured I'd flag it here. I think they do the song justice, let me know what y'all think.

Also curious if anyone has insight on Riley's banjo here -- tailpiece looks a bit like it comes from Romero Banjos but I'm not well versed enough to say either way.

They sound great! Never heard of them before but they're heading my way in May. Not sure about the banjo either.

They were / maybe still are half of an excellent band The Onlies. Viv I believe is the daughter of Carol Elizabeth Jones & James Leva. Pretty good pedigree.
Sorry can't help with the banjo.

The sound they're generating is just too beautiful for words...

Glad you all liked it as much as I did! Think I'll have to catch them when they come through next time. Always exciting to get a new band to listen to too, liking what I've heard so far from The Onlies.

Viv is indeed the daughter of Carol Elizabeth and James. And yes, The Onlies are alive and well as a band, though they now live in three different places! Riley and Viv are dear friends of mine, as are the other two Onlies, Sami Braman and Leo Shannon. I have watched Riley, Sami, and Leo grow up playing together since they were kids at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, in Port Townsend, WA, and Viv is a wonderful, if more recent, addition to the band. In fact, as of this year, the whole band was chosen to be the joint artistic directors of Fiddle Tunes for the next five years! I have no doubt they will do a fabulous job of it, and I think they were a brilliant choice to lead Fiddle Tunes into the future. I have the highest esteem for all four of them, both as phenomenal musicians and as lovely human beings. I'm so happy to see them getting the attention they so well deserve. Old-time music is in good hands!
