Hi all...I am in covid isolation and got lots of time on my hands all of a sudden....so...here is my thunk. I have a flush fret fretless banjo...that I dearly love...been playing it for about 10 years...and it has lately occurred to me that it is the perfect instrument for an introvert. Why? The fret markers give a visual cue as to where my fingers should be...and this is a very nice feature....I can go way up the neck and get notes with a reasonable degree of accuracy...but...I gotta be looking at the fingerboard almost all of the time...to get those visual cues...I have found that if I start to look around...i.e. NOT at the fingerboard...my intonation suffers and I start hearing sour notes...so I end up almost never looking away from the fingerboard...play a flush fret fretless and you have a good excuse to never again look at anyone while you are playing...I have an ever growing appreciation for all who play a fretless instruments...almost all without those flush frets...
My intonation if improving...but I think I now have a rather permanent dependency on those markers...and I am OK with that...esp. because I still play my fretted banjos...and my brain has to adjust every time I switch from fretless to fretted...or back again...so...all you uber shy folks out there...get yourself a flush fret fretless banjo and never make eye contact again:)

A fretless might help introverts, but what I perceive is that "introverted banjo player" is a bit of an oxymoron. I think true introverts play quieter instruments than banjos, which can be heard by neighbors. I even suggest looking up once in a while, because bad intonation is better than failing to dodge rotten eggs. (I am not dissing your playing; just banjo hating neighbors.)
As for ihat intonation, your fingers will eventually hit the right notes without your eyes looking, and a fretless for introversion will not be as effective.
