I have posted a few times in this forum as I have been looking for my next banjo. There was a ton of good advice and the most consistent message was to go places and play banjos and buy the one that speaks to me. I did just that. I recently went to Turtle Hill Banjo Co and played a few. The trip was a couple of hours from the homestead but it was well worth it. Dave was great, I enjoyed the experience and I learned a lot.



In an effort to make what could be a long story a little shorter, I will jump to the end. I just sent a deposit check to secure a new DEERING® TERRY BAUCOM model banjo. I am not going to be able to make the trip back down there to pick it up until later in December so now I am trying to be patient.



I was originally looking for a Sierra or Deluxe model but this one definitely had the better sound. My wife was with me and she agreed. She echoed what was said to me a few times on this forum. Buy the one that will make me happy, it will be worth it in the long run to spend a little more.



Thanks for all the great advice. I will post pictures when I finally pick it up.

That's a mighty fine axe and you'll get years of enjoyment from it. Wasn't the journey fun?

Congrats. A number of great players choose that one. Graham Sharp plays one with Steep Canyon Rangers. I have heard Terry Baucom's up close at a workshop and while I know a lot is the picker, that thing was awesome. Good job.

You got a good one. And you will never regret the move up to the Baucom. Enjoy. You did a smart thing. Playing and comparing is critical if you want to be satisfied with your decision. You would have never know that little upgrade in sound unless you did what you did.

It seems like it’s been a lifetime but I finally picked up my new Deering Terry Baucom banjo yesterday (Dec 26th) from Turtle Hill Banjo Company. I like the way it sounds right out of the box so I will not be tinkering with it. I can now turn my old bottlecap style banjo into my experimental banjo. I plan to us it to tinker with setup and see how different adjustments change the tone and playability.

One thing that grabbed my attention with this new banjo is that the string spacing is ever so slightly larger. The difference is slight but my playing is cleaner. Both left hand and right hands have a little more room and it’s just more comfortable to play.

Congrats on the new banjo!  That "couple hours" drive sure paid off for you.  You got a top notch banjo/ 

it's a perfect fit for you/ AND you have spousal approval.  It's a win/ win situation all the way around!
