This is what is in the back of my mind when I am improvising, 12 notes each having an emotional function.
Added an mp3 for practice which stays on G C D for about four minutes each. I suggest that you play the unison note and then the other emotion note varying with different rhythms.

I have made so many neck board charts over the years for guitar, banjo, bouzouki... Even as a mental exercise, this is very cool and kind of like the charts I make in reverse. I'm subscribing to the thread just to see what it provokes folks to think about. Playing by ear, if feels like my fingers are drawn to particular notes and patterns that folks who have practiced more than I have plan to go to. I like thinking about the fretboard as a map of tonal/emotional possibilities, rather than a math problem.

I can't figure out these charts or what they are attempting to convey. I'll also point out that emotional fresponses are very subjective, and that combinations of notes, whether harmonically or melodically, can alter the emotional content.
Maybe I'm strange, but I've always played by ear with my ears, not with my eyes.

That MP3 was unbelievably useful, I can't believe I've never put something together like this myself. I've always struggled with improvising and this is super helpful, thank you. I'll probably experiment with my own variations now - you've inspired me!!
