Most any meal a banjo picker gets for free, IS a happy meal.

When people invite me for a meal, I reply that I've never known any banjo picker who would turn down a free meal.

Saturday, Dec 5th, 1:28 pm...McDonalds

Good Afternoon,

Well i didn't think i was going to do anymore videos but........

I was outside, pre-loading the Trailblazer, getting stuff arranged like i want them, and i started sweating.
So i says to myself (i do this a lot) i says to my self...."self...if it is hot enough that you are making idiot water, then it is hot enough to be on the front porch, making a video for the "warp watchers" or as moo calls y'all "Kev Heads"!

So i got the sick 5 out and got all antsy and made 2 short videos for y'all.

Now these ain't much, just some kick offs and breaks and one partial instrumental to end with the first one. And before we go any further, let say this.........

"out of all the Earl Scruggs instrumentals, that i find personally the most difficult for me to play is "the pike county breakdown"!
I suck at single string work, and i've always avoided it, same as i try to avoid or prolong death, my short little stubby fingers just don't like doing single string work, and that is probably the reason why i leaned so heavily toward melodics instead of single string work.

I remember back in 02, the last time i worked Silver Dollar City, Rhonda Vincent got me up on stage with her to do a instrumental and she said do Pike County Breakdown, and i still go to therapy when i can over that ordeal. I just looked over at Big k and hoped he would bail me out, but.....when you get to bat in the major leagues, you have to hit what is pitched, and i struck out.....looking! and this last attempt is no better, but i was capo'd in a, and pike county sounds good there, so that they say, is that!

I don't know when moo will get these posted, as i told him, it was just a wild hair, and gave me a good excuse to stop working, plus i didn't' expect sunshine and pushing 70 today, don't think anybody around here did, after the "toad strangler rain" we got the last 2 days!

Ok guys, i really do think these last offerings will be it, until i get settled back in Cincy, but, as i've told moo, i've said that before...haven't i

Y'all have a gooderun

I heard some church organ in the background at the end there...I wonder what that duet might sound like.

I had a quick look and stumbled across this, which is vaguely related to what you posited Mooooo. Only need to watch the first 30 secs to get the idea. Watching the keys might be a good learning exercise.

I used to live a few doors down from a VFW and every so often they would get the bagpipes out for some practice....I used to jam along with them all the time. Sounded really cool.

Friday, Dec 11th, 11:33 am, Luckman Coffee....Cincinnati Ohio

Good Morning one and all!

Well the kids and i pulled a fast one and actually got out of Mt View yesterday morning at 7:45 am and arrived at my friends home last night....12 hours later, and very very wore out.
You Ain't lived till you load up 2 good size dogs and traveled 600 miles, it'll change you for sure!

We left a day early to stay ahead of the impending white death that was right in my path of retreat from Mt View, so when i seen the big storm a coming, we headed out like a herd of turtles!

The first three hrs are the worst simply put, there isn't nothing but 2 lane pig trails and goat paths until the other side of Popular Bluff, i mean you go up one hill, and when you top the other side , your on the wrong side of the road, that in itself will ware on you nerves, but all in all, we made the trip just fine.

Me and moo kind of played a sneaky on you with the latest video, but mike figured it would be better to not feed you the whole meal at once, seeing as how i might be a few more days before i get another one done, but once i get settled into permanent digs, i'll crank out something.

Well, not much more going on right now, i need to get back and let dogs out, i am also sitting my friends black lab pup, and i mean she is quick as a deer, long legged and lean and i made the mistake of letting her off leash earlier this morning, and i felt like Chevy Chase in the movie "funny farm" i didn't think i would ever get that pup reeled in, she could circle me at full gallop and my reflexes just aint that of a young man anymore, i had to lure her in with treats, but i finally got her corralled .

Ok guys, i am awaiting the snow storm, and will post again soon.
Y'all have a gooderun

You made it out alive! Nice work.

Sound like you'll be busy with that pup. Labs are full of piss and vinegar!

I'm a bit bummed, I don't think we're going to get much snow in Philly. I love a good snow storm...when it comes on the weekend.

I will guarantee you this: the next video we see of you won't be out on the porch in the sunshine!. Man, i can't get warm today even wit a turtle neck and and a sweatshirt. I do not like this white stuff. Glad you made it back to the queen city with no major events.

Guess Who Has "WIFI" .......For Now!

That's right Kev-heads/Warp Watchers ole warpy has wifi at Dan and Carol's!

But don't expect the quality of my post or picking to improve, i reached my peak a long time ago, but it is nice to sit in a relaxed position and not have to get in my car and drive to a hot spot somewhere!

We got about 3 to four inches of snow on Saturday, and Dan and Carol live on a hill that is worse than some of the mountain tops back in mt view, and even worse than that, it is a slick asphalt driveway that doglegs at the top and then goes up again, i mean it is wicked, but i already new that seeing as how i've been an adopted member of there family for years!
I took Dan and Carol to the Airport Hotel last night, because Carol got wind of a impending pass of more snow that was going to hit during what was to be our morning commute to the airport(they had a 5:15 take off time), and as it turns out, her prediction was spot on!
This morning me and the kids woke to another 4-6 inches of heavy wet snow, and let me tell ya, the old trailblazer slip and slid just a bit, even in 4x4, but my friend the "propane barron of Cincinnait" was at the coffee shop this morning and had his old 350 ford snow plow out and i talked him into hitting a pass on the driveway, and now it is very negotiable!

The first thing i've been doing is re-aquinting myself with Dan's blue ridge guitar, i think he has the best sounding and playing one on the planet, and the neck is close to a banjo neck. I really hate how i lost my guitar skills in these last year and a half, and i am going to get them back.....simple muscle memory, but the old memory has faltered some, but over the next couple of weeks, i am really going to give it the ole college try...trouble is.... i never went to college!

Tomorrow afternoon i am supposed to go look at a house that i may be able to move into just for utilities.....till i can get something going. The house will need to be shoveled out(so i've been told) but beggars can't be choosers and the quickest way for a good friend, to become not such a good friend.....is to wear out your welcome, and Dan and Carol are my best friends and besides, me and the kids....especially the kids, are tried of flopping and moving, and looking over our shoulders, i am ready for permanent digs, even if it is a new dumpster!

My fingers are broke open at the cuticles and my hands hurt from the wet cold, so it's going to be a few days before i pick anything seriously, but don't lose the faith, i'll get something going again soon.

Ok guys, thanks again for all the thoughts and y'all being here for me on this journey, it's been a wild ride so far, and i'm curious to see what happens next because i ain't got no idea of what is in store for me, and even though i have no idea of where i am going, i figure i don't want to be late getting there!

Y'all have a gooderun

Mooooo - Posted - 01/13/2019:  15:30:13

I hope the house with the Utilities rent works out for everyone, sounds great...you're gonna need wifi there too, nothing crazy, I usually get the slowest and it works fine, I can watch lots of stuff with no problem. I don't play games so I don't need the speed. Good luck and Pick something for us when you can.

Hey Guys,

I wish i could come to you with a new video, and turn back some pages in our recent months past when i was sitting in the porch swing in Mt View(not that i loved it there) but i realize now that those are going to be some of the happiest times of my life.....not that it's over for anytime in the foreseeable future, but i need to text talk, and get some of this stuff i'm carrying around out of my head, and off my chest....so please lend me an ear!

Things have really went south for ole warp and family(Bernidine and Andy!) since coming back to Cincinnati, and now, i am in Columbus Oh!

I won't know the out come of my SSDI hearing for a few more weeks, maybe even a few months, but i drew a really tough Judge that has a 70% turn down rate, and about 2 -3 weeks before my hearing, i found out through scans that my low grade Lymphoma is out of remission and really rearing it's ugly head!

I wore out my welcome with my friends, and the babies and I lived about a week out of a Red Roof Inn and then we did a few days in the Trailblazer!
Let me tell ya, homelessness is no picnic!

Before anybody says anything..."NO I Cant go back to Arkansas, i wore out that welcome too!

Of all the weird things in my life to happen, and i've been shot at and cut with knifes, my wonderful ex girlfriend (bernidine and andy's mom) reached out to me
and her and her Husband Earl(he's the absolute best) reached out to me and had us come to Columbus and have fixed up there basement and took me and the kids in!

I have re established with an oncologist that i seen today, but i also have an appointment with the James Cancer Center Ohio State and most likely will treat there!

I spent most of this past weekend in a hospital close by when my gallbladder went wonky and i just barley avoided an emergency surgery!

Short of not sure about how to treat the cancer for now( i have up coming bone marrow biopsy and lymph none biopsy) this will determine if my cancer has stayed the same or has changed its histology and is being a bit more aggressive. I was told today because it's in both the chest and abdomen that i am at least stage 3 and i've always known that if a positive bone marrow comes back, your automatically a stage 4, which all of this is still very treatable and able to put me back in remission, and short of dropping some pounds the last few weeks....i'm not sick.....at least physically, but my mental game is really in need of something and i'm open to suggestions!

The really sad part of all of this is all of this moving around and not watching our diets and living out of the car has taken its toll on my babies.

Andy, my Begal Bassett mix, had a bad Tumor removed from his side about 8 days ago.
he was sick, and feverish and lethargic and could hardly move, so i bit the bullet and took him to see my ex's vet that treats her dogs..... i was told this would cost about 450.00 and he said he would do it for 250.00 and he asks me if i had that much!
I Pulled out my envelope that had all the cash i have in the world i had 460.00 exactly and then he reached out and took my hand when he looked inside my envelop ....

this vet, this wonderful human of such great compassion, that i've never seen in another human in my life......he treated and removed Andys 2 pound tumor for free.....that's right, he found out i was a Vet and said that was his way of saying thanks for serving, and Andy is doing wonderful and bouncing around like a puppy, more than my life, i am so glad he's getting back to normal....although his tumor is cancerous, the doc said because it was encapsulated and not into his abdominal organs he thinks andy has a good out look for another year or two and said even if andy was his dog....he would not do radiation!

These next few lines are the most difficult lines i've ever written or formed in my brain in my life..........

These last few years have been really tough on the love of my life and my heart and soul.....my precious English Bullgirl Bernidiene,

After we got here to columbus on Feb 13th, she started taking a turn for the worse and really had a bad build up of of fluid in her little belly and these last few days, she was very tired and could hardly walk on her own and i could tell her days were near.

I had nursed Bernidine along since her heart went bad over 5 years ago, and i went back to truck driving just to afford her meds!

I had scheduled her an appointment with the same vet and clinic that helped andy and the surgeon / vet Named Dr Renoylds at the Mann vet clinic here in Lewis Center oh where we are living.......

Dr Renyolds said she was so cute.....but she was badly anemic and her liver was swollen and 4 times the size it should be and her quality of life was right now at about 10%........she had struggled all afternoon and would lay her head on my lap...as if to say daddy i'm tired, i'm sick and i need help, her paws were swollen and full of fluid and she wasn't eating and i was having to carry her up and down the basement steps and sit her outside to use the bathroom!.......i was honestly hoping for better news and the vet was willing to try anything i liked.....but said there was no hope and i was only trying to extend what
must happen to us all.........

So at somewhere around 4:15 or so yesterday afternoon, Feb 26th i did what i hoped that i could be spared from in this life and i said goodbye to my "Heart and Soul" and she was so much stronger than i was......she went so peacefully.....i must say....and i don't mean to offend anybody......."when my time comes.....my precious Bernidine's face is the first thing i want to see when i cross from this world into what ever lies beyond!

Ok guys......i'm going to stop for now....you've got an update on ole warp....and please i will tell you just like i've told Moo and Ken in pm's and few days ago.....

I am not sick.....just a bit under the weather right now and i know what i must do and what lies ahead.....this really isn't my first time but the 4th.....so don't feel sorry for me and none of this.....well you know the kind of post that usually follows this kind of stuff...just talk to me and keep it real...... i will bounce back!

Warp!

We had two dogs (Banjo and Fretless, mother and son) and two cats (Rascal and Snowflake, brothers), all living together for years until, in the space of ten days, we lost Rascal and Fretless. This happened over 25 years ago but we still think about them to this day. Hang in there, and focus on the joy she brought you, and how you had the strength to end her pain.

Hey guys
just an update on what's been going on with ole warp!

I'm well into my cancer treatment , and for the most part, i'm doing well.

Of course my cancer is not terminal, and we've always known that, but it is really pissed off at me this time, and as of right now, i'm in the hospital, and have been since last saturday, but i am expected to get out tomorrow, and boy am i ever ready.

I've had some pm's from a few members, and i'm thankful for all the contact, and support.

I've not touched my banjo since i left Mt View, but have kept my fingers limber on my friends guitar playing scruggs style and my own style of finger picking, but i hope to get down to Cincinnati soon and get my banjo.

I was supposed to play the appalachian festival this year, but i am just not going to be strong enough and that as they say....is that!

I sent some videos via youtube to moo a couple of days ago, of me back in my glory days in 09 , weather or not they make it on here, i can't say, but i just wanted y'all to know that i miss the posting, and if i ever get my banjo back, i will start posting new stuff again.....funny, it takes cancer to make me realize i want to play!

Ok guys, y'all keep on keeping on, and i will do my part, and well get this going again soon....
Y'all have a gooderin

Hey all,

So sorry to have to post this, when Moo is trying so hard to keep me relevant ,and i wish i had happier news, but for those who have followed my journey since last august when i fell into dire straits, a little less than 2 hrs ago, i had to say goodbye to the last part of me, that i've been measuring my life by these last 10 almost 11 years.

I had to help my beloved Andy, the begal basset mix cross the rainbow bridge, and it just wasn't meant for him and bernidine to make this part of my life's journey, and i have to except that.
I told him to go find his sister bernidine, and they both wait for me, i didn't tell him how long i'd be, but i would find them again, and i promised i would do better by them this next time.
I have a huge whole in my heart and soul now, and i don't know how to measure my life, its just been the three of of us, for so very long, ......i am truly lost, and don't know how to get back, just saying......

Andy,(the begal basset , who i called by boy) July 4, 2008-May 6, 2019, forever with my thoughts, and in my heart and soul !

Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers guys, i have a short story to tell ya, and seeing as how many of you probably think ole warp is "warped" and off his rocker anyway......here goes!

The Chemo has really been a b...h, and i told my onc yesterday that i was ready to quit, because i just couldn't understand why i should beat my self up and let the chemo beat me up, to the point I'm so sick and in the hospital, and living with my ex and her husband in there basement with my dying dog and his cancer......all the while i was arguing my point with here yesterday, Andy was having his time, and declining fast while my onc told me this..........

She said, you are stage 4, and all stage 4 cancers are serious, even if it is a less aggressive and indolent type, it can transform and become "way more argessive" and kill you, and if you chose not to treat, or to stop treatment, i don't believe you will have a chance at a much longer life, but if you do these next 5 treatments, i think you have a 70% chance or higher of knocking this back into remission, out of the bone marrow and you could get another 7 years of remission and great health , just like you've had, and she just laid it on the line, and said, there are people who would love to have the shot that you've got, and they won't get it......so, i relented and said, see ya next wednesday to start round two.....not knowing that my andy was failing fast as i was on the way home, in fact, my ex(andys mom) called as i was coming home as said, "he's not doing well," and when i saw the pain he was having, that he previously had not been having, i i knew i must take him in.
Andy's tumor that had been completely removed back in feb, had grown back to half it's size and you could see daily growth, in fact, it had grew by 25% in the last week, the vet was astounded, and of course we made the decision, and he went as peacefully as my bernidine, and the last thing i told him other than i love you, was go find your sister, and y'all be there waiting for me, when its my time.

Last night was miserable , having andy had spared me some pain when i lost bernidine, but now, going back down into this empty basement, and sleeping all by myself for the first time in 10 plus years, looking at the spot on the couch where he laid with me until we would move to the bed, was just too much to endure.

I remembered i had his collar out in the car, so i went and got it, and brought it down stairs with me, and i took his blanket, the one he's been sleeping on since we left last august and when we left Mt view, i took the blanket and made a little head like lump in it, and fastened his collar around it, and it became my Andy woobie, and i made me a bed on the couch on the very spot he would lay, and i hugged it and cried myself to sleep......no, i'm not ashamed to admit this.

about 2 am this morning, i awoke, amazed i had fell asleep with out any meds, and i was very much awake, and in one instance, i hear a most distinct bark, it was a deep bark that i've recognized all these years, and a bark that i would here when he was happy and watching something, it was Andy's bark, no other bark have i ever heard like that, just one loud woof, powerful and deep, like the begal bassett he was, it was right above me, like he was out in he yard when he was watching other dogs and the rabbits in the area.
Andy was letting me know, he had made it, he had found bernidine, and that they were all right , it was like he was saying , Daddy, you don't have to worry about us anymore, and you can fight now without fearing about our health and who will watch us when your sick, you have things to do daddy, and we want you to go do them, get well, and it's not your time, we will be here waiting for you when it is, but it not now or anytime soon, now go, get up and go, go for us,......so i did.

I was wide awake and i knew i wasn't going back to sleep, so i got up, and got dressed, and creeped up stairs, and brushed my teeth, shaved and combed my hair, and i went outside, and i got in my trailblazer, and i knew where i was going, i headed to Cincinnati, and i got my banjo, and i picked up my suit jacket, and shirts i wear with my suit and stetsion and i did a 12 hour turn around and i have my banjo with me and i am knocking off dust and rust, and i plan to play the Appalachian Festival this weekend, all because of a bark from the great unknown beyond, and i feel like for the first time since i started all this, i can complete my treatment, and i will knock this back into remission and have some quality years, and i want to spend those years picking again, and telling my story of overcoming and overwhelming life beat downs, and the story's of me and my dogs, and how they are not just dogs, but have a purpose in our lives, and we most times, never have it revealed until they are gone.

I don't expect anybody to understand, that i wasn't looking for any kind of a sigh or devin intervention , this is just how things have unfolded since andy passed, and i feel the need to share it.

I still am hurting, and i miss him so, but i have pic's and his blanket and collar that have his essence on it, but i am playing again, and him and bernidine both loved to sit and listen to me play, and and times, i feel good and almost normal, with a sense of hope i've not had since we came back in early Jan.

Thanks for the continued thoughts and prayers, and i will post more as i get stronger and go through this process of fighting and winning, and now, I've got a couple of advocates up above my head now, trying to pull some strings for me, and watching me until some time way down the road when we will reunite, for me, that will be my heaven, but for now, i have a journey that is not near over, i'll try to keep y'all included as long as you can stand it.

Great story Warp. Sad and touching, but a great story. It's also cool that you are reunited with your banjo and warming up to pick this weekend. Enjoy the fest.

Wow, Kevin, that’s inspiring. I’ve had friends who had visits from departed pets and close relatives , I believe it’s to comfort the ones left behind.
Glad you’re pickin’ again,, the world needs your talents.

Damn right you are going to finish your treatment. Glad Andy barked some sense into you. You're going to get through it. Keep your head down, lean into it, take one day at a time, and you'll get through it.

That empty house is the worst. My wife's parents had to the same for Benji, their 16 year old s***zhu, just 1 week ago today. The empty house has been killing them. Get out to that festival this weekend, pick that banjo, and get your mind off of things.

Kevin,
Hard for me to be able to put the right words to you. But if want to tell you that I am proud as hell of you and have great respect for you. Man you have been sucker punched from every direction possible and yet you have the ability and grit to see the good in situations. How many of us, when faced with 1/10th of what you have been thru would have been incapacitated and feeling sorry for ourselves. We sure would not have been shaving in the middle of the night and driving hours to get a banjo. Reminds me of Don Stover and that movie where, when he is battling it all gets out his banjo and plays. Kevin, I don’t know. I have been in athletics all my life and have met some great ones and worked with some good ones. All I can figure is, it is all about heart, and man you are showing some. I look forward to seeing you deck this thing.
It will be great to get over there with you this summer.
Let the Warpdrive Drive!

you guys are the best, and i will continue to do my part, what i am finding out for the first time in my life is, even old pine knots like me, can have a bout of getting soft and struggling.
I never would have guessed that once again, when this decided to rear it's ugly head, i'd be by myself, like i was 15 years ago, but, i seem to have more focus this time, but the sense of loss from Bernidine and Andy, just kind of sucker punched me.

Thanks again for all the support, and maybe this weekend, somebody will shoot some vid's of me in a jam, and i can find a way to post it, but i feel the getting out, at a careful pace will do me some good.

Thanks larry,

Since i've gotten my rk-35 back,"and yes it's coming back quick" i've observed some things that based on the playing of the rk 35's and 36's in the Columbus Oh area that i've played, are this......

I like my rk-35 way better than the new one's i've played in the last 2 months.
My rk's neck is much slimmer and faster, and the stain was darker than the new one's.

The new one's i've played, the necks are clubby, and the stain is light, and not well balanced across the resonator.

Just an observance i thought i would share!

Sunday, May 12th, My Ex's basement, Lewis Center Oh

Happy, Mother's Day to all the hangout mothers!

Well, Gang.....Ole Warp made the Appalachian Festival!

I got into Cincinnati about 11 on friday, and i stopped and piked up my hat and then went to my friends Dan and Carol Rosenthal and i stayed with them over the weekend in between my duties at the festival!

I must truthfully say, i did more MC work than banjo picking, but i earned my keep!
i mainly did MC work friday and then Saturday, i jamed all day, then on sunday(today) i played banjo on the gospel show this morning which is what i've been doing the last 5 years on Sundays, and then today i MC'd the cavalcade of stars show in the afternoon, which is just basically some of the booked performers in a show venue, with a good bluegrass band as a back up house band which for the last 7 or 8 years has been Cincinnati's very own, "Comet Bluegrass All Stars" and i must admit, i had a very large time this year, and though it personally has been a sad week, i had a lot of good support and i'm glad i was feeling up to snuff to do it!

The big treat for me this weekend is a story i just have to share with ya'll, and it goes something like this.....well, it goes exactly like this.

Yesterday i was jamming all day, mostly with my new found friends from the last three years, Ray and Beth Vinning, and they are quite a good duo....banjo and bass, and we've really bonded and enjoy jamming together and putting on a show for the crowds that gather.
Ray is the absolute voice doupleganger for the Late Dave Evans, and it brings chills to everybody who hears him, so after we had jammed for about 3 hrs for the crowds, we went back to there camper where he grilled us some food, and we supped for a good hour and a half.

Long about 3 in the after noon i guess? i went back to the tree and stumps where we had been jamming, and set up, and was just sitting and picking by myself for the passers by, this is something i enjoy, because i can play what ever i want, at what ever speed i want, and not worry about weather i 'm too fast, or stepping on another band members break(something i've been accused of before).

I'm sitting and picking, and some people that were watching me earlier in the day had returned and was intently watching me again, and then i noticed this tall lanky girl, in her late teens i suspected, and she was backed up against a tree, directly in front of me, about 15-20 yards away, watching my every move i made on the banjo, i mean to tell you, i was starting to get un-comfortable, and wandered what was wrong with this girl, that she had nothing better to do, than watch me play the banjo, and grinning the whole time.

So i decided to engage the young lass, and i says to her,"your grinning like a mule eating bumble bee's, watching me play this, do you like the banjo? and she says, "yes" and i said to her...."do you play?" and she said...."yes i do" so i says...."do you have your picks? and she says.....Yes i do! ...So i motioned her over and starting taking off my banjo, and handed it to her and gave her my seat!

As the youngster was sitting down, she says to me..."i know who your are", now to say i was taken a back.....is a understatement.....i said "how do you know me? and she replied that she follows me here on the hangout and i asked her who she is and she replied "puddinfangers" and i recalled her liking some of my post, and i was so honored to meet this young lady, and let me tell you......the girl can pick.

This young lady's name is Kendel (sorry if i spelled it wrong) and she has some good licks, especially since she is self taught, i was most impressed with her use of melodic stylings, and she has real nice touch, a good smooth steady roll, and she can attest to how bad of shape my banjo is in, but like me, she just plays around the bad spots.

We must have sit for a good 2 hours, and now and again i would show her some things that i thought would help her, but i tell ya....for three and a half years of picking, she is farther along than i was at 10 years of picking, and that is the truth!

I was happy to hear from her that she is going to Moorehead State in Kentucky in the fall where one of her classes will be bluegrass 101, i think that is taught by Raymond McClain.

This getting to meet such a fine young banjo picker really was the cherry on top of my sundae this weekend, and i hope she will continue to follow and chime in here on the hangout, and i expect all you to encourage this young lady, i expect great things from her in the future.

Ok guys, i am wore to a frazzle, this was a large weekend for ole warp, and i've got serious business ahead this coming week as i start on wednesday with another beat down from Chemo, so i would appreciate any good thoughts you might send my way, and i thank you once more for being here for me.

Y'all have a gooderin
Warp!
