" no soccer moms in yoga pants here gang! This is strictly a old steel clangers environment, and all you need to get fit and nothing more.

The gym is next to the gospel mission homeless shelter and is designed to also minister to people like myself....you know..people that are trying to overcome great adversity.



The dues are a poultry 20 dollars " A Year " although it's only open 8 hrs a day, as I said...its all a serious lifter needs! My primary care doc firmly believes this is contributing to my sudden good results in my blood counts starting to rise , and her only caution to me is of course to mind my " over zealous " nature, and not pull a muscle. I really look forward to my workouts and seeing the regular gym rats, it had given me a new found sense of purpose , and only reinforced what I've always known must stay in my life..the love of trying to stay healthy and fit!



On the banjo side of life...my good friend and Appalachian festival manager Ron Simmons, got me out last night for the monthly jam at Willis music in florence ky .



Since I've been practicing good hearing management, and keeping my resonator stuffed with towels, my ears have been better but not without some distressing news...my doc feels I most likely have meniere's disease, and moving forward we will deal with it...for now, we are just dealing with the physical manifestations of it!



What a great surprise I had last night at the jam, when I walked in and seen my newly found friend from last year's encounter at the Appalachian festival.. Kendall..or on the hangout she lurks as "puddinfangers"



Kendall has been attending college this year at Moorehead state college in Kentucky ,and is enrolled in the bluegrass course and is a member of the student bluegrass band under direction of Raymond McClain, and what a good banjo picker she is becoming.



I was eager to hand her my Hatfield, and listen to her let it RIP. In fact, I didn't play my Hatfield all night , it was hers for the night, and I was tickled pink to sit and jam on her gold tone, and actually get to hear my banjo from a listener's perspective.



Kendall's ability with melodic and chromatic stylings are just astounding to me, she plays Noam piketty's arrangements with good tone and dexterity of finger dancing that I am just jealous of! This kid is taylormade for banjo picking , her right hand is rock solid on the head with the fingers planted both little and ring...she looks like a banjo picker...even from the audience as I observed when she took the Hatfield to the stage to play through the mic's with the jam band.



I guarantee you, I had as much if not..more fun than she did last night, I found it very rewarding on a personal level.... just being happy for another person's accomplishments and not having to be...ON...as a entertainer, as I often feel compelled or asked to do!



It was a great night, and I look forward to watching and having more interactions with puddinfangers as she continues her banjo journey.



Ok gang, I guess this should bring us up to speed for the goings ons in my life...as always, I am glad to be here, and I remain humbled for having you people in my life,

Good Morning to one and all....



Sorry i've been gone for so much gang, i've been focused on the gym now for a couple of months, and just trying to get strong again, and am doing quite well on that front....the gym has become a real force in my life and the positive atmosphere there is helping feed my mental acuity that i need to stay sharp in my environment, so the banjo has been on the back burner...so to speak.



Speaking of banjo....lets all continue to send out the good Thoughts and prayers to Robin Smith....i first met Robin back in the 90's when he was out with the Reno Brothers...a great man, and great banjo builder....lets send him our best thoughts and wishes for a well recovery!



I have a problem that has become a source of great concern to my health, and it isn't my cancer.....my hearing is at a point to where i am going to have to call it quits with trying to play with any bands.....it is just not going to get any better, and the last few outings have been a nightmare trying to focus on the timings and tones of the other instruments around me......i just can't tell you how horrible it has become, and the ringing now go to levels that are so loud in head....i'm surprised the other jammers can't hear it outside my head!



I was ready to just totally give it up, and my ole buddy Ken Hydinger helped me come to the conclusion that i just need to play as a single or with one other instrumentalist , because i am doing that with good results, meaning just myself and one other person, doesn't seem to "blur" my hearing near as bad, and i still have great hands and skill sets....no problems with arthritis in my hands, and my speed is way above average....so, i won't throw the baby out with the bath water, i will just have to concentrate on doing what i've been doing....just playing the way i've had the greatest enjoyment these last few years....just play like me, as a single.



I've noticed that playing outside is not near as detrimental as being closed in doors in small rooms, and with the warmer temps of spring and summer arriving soon, i will be able to do that a lot. It is somewhat sad because of my ability to not hear the different tones, i miss the warmths i used to hear in different banjos and other instruments, now they all just are different levels of "pitchy, ringing noise's", but at least i can still hit the notes with power and accuracy and speed, as i've always

done, so i will adjust my focus in this realm of thought, and be happy i still could have many good years of being able to put on some kind of entraining show with my banjo and or guitar!



The 51st Appalachian Festival with be this coming mothers day weekend on may the 8-10 at old coney island here in Cincinnati,

yours truly will be helping as masters of ceremony, on the up close and personal, and the Willis Music stages, and i will be out and about, acting a fool, and telling

jokes, and shaking and howdeying and doing the voodoo i do.

As most of you that follow me know....last year at that time was of great uncertainty for me, and it will be nice to be able to just enjoy the upcoming year from a much healthier perspective , i marvel at all that has transpired in my life in this last year, and again...." I HAVE YOU HANGOUT MEMBERS TO THANK FOR IT!



I would encourage any of you to make the trip to Cincinnati for this event, it is very family oriented , plenty of artery clogging food and good diverse appalachian music to listen too along with some scattered bluegrass bands! I always enjoy it and highly recommend it, a beautiful setting down on the river!



Some of you have wondered about my work as a truck driver....i've not been pushing it and just using these months as my blood levels have been up and down, to just be in the gym 5 days a week and get strong....plus the coronoviris has had the container industry in trucking slow at a snails pace.

The cargo ships that off load to the trains and tractor trailers have not been in port and the Chinese only went back to work last week....so i have received news as of last week that a company right down from my apartment will consider me at the end of april....i'm good with that....i am just doing nothing but getting stronger, and firmly believe that i am making the right decision, and not rushing as i did back when i first moved back to Cincinnati, and i am trying to develop the patience of a oyster.....maybe?



Ok gang, again...sorry its been so long, but with better health and weather, hopefully you will hear my banjo again soon, but probably from the out doors were my ears can tolerate it better.

I'm doing well, and like everybody else in America, I feel like a goose that is waking up in a new world every day,..thankful that I have made my rent, I am not hot, cold or hungry, and I am safe, and ready for trouble, should trouble find me.



I have been thinking about you guys alot, when I take my banjo out each day, and hope someday soon, I will get back to posting videos again.



I was telling ken Hydinger a couple of weeks ago, I'm really pleased with the tones I'm getting out of the Hatfield nowadays, and I would love to get some input from others on its sound...you know, to keep myself in check,to make sure my ears aren't playing tricks on me.



My last visit to my oncologist did not yield the results we were expecting, my counts took a slight downward curve, but not as bad as as a few months ago.

My onc was pleased that I continue to fell good, and she said my appearance was fantastic, I was up 7 lbs from the prior month, and she could see it was all muscle, and that was what I was going for.. and until my gym closed, last month, I was lifting 5 days a week, and that has been my most sorrowful part of social distancing, I'm a old gym rat, and home workouts just wont let you do what you can do with commerical grade gym equipment, but hopefully, in a couple of weeks, we can get back to another resurgence of our social activities, and my muscles will again get to eat!



I have no idea what is going on with my laptop, I think it is dying a slow death from its duties as a movie theater, and tv,and radio, and recordings studio, so if I should get lucky enough to have a windfall, I will probably find some adequate laptop that will allow me to record videos again, and I can start posting again,...maybe from the park across the street.

This posting from this phone is haphazard,  as I've had completed postings, several paragraphs long...lost, due to the wrong poke of my finger..I can't continue with long postings , knowing I can waste a good poste, in one finger placement.

Ok guys, everyone stay safe, when you find yourself getting down, take your banjo out, and wake up the town...

You are so right about taking out the banjo when you're feeling down!

I was just playing Randy Lynn Rag with the Cheat-A-Keys that you sold me over the phone in 2003 when you were working at FOTMC. Your posts bring a smile to my face because I remember how patient you were when I called back after they arrived with what I realized, as you answered me, was a really dumb question that was covered in the instructions. You never let on, though, which I appreciated at the time and obviously still do.

Those songs are fun to play when you know the tuners aren't going to flub up!

I think that was perfect Kevin. It shows us all that even the pros occasionally make mistakes and the secret to success is to play through them with grace and don't get bogged down worrying about a missed note or two. I find it inspiring. But that tone you are getting from that Hatfield sounds pretty great. Do you find it has mellowed or is it still blasting you out of your chair?

Actually, I was really trying to hold back on overplaying, and thusly, I stumble on the single string notation.

The banjo is still incredibly loud,...but the tone ..not the volume has mellowed to the point where my ears are happy...
We discuss tone so much on the hangout, and it is individually subjective, and tone can still be pleasing at high volumes, but this hatfield has the bite I am looking for, my hands are naturally strong, and it's not in my style to concentrate on holding back, or back away from songs I like eventhough I may not play them well

I enjoy playing for you guys, and I will try anything for you, but how I play in these videos and how I play with a good band, and in the studio, are separate propositions.

But no..I'm not afraid of mistskes... earl cut records and videos with them....who should expect more from me?

It's funny that you bring up "concentrate on holding back" because I have been practicing exactly that. I have been trying to practice playing as soft as a whisper while keeping up at 144-152bpm on my metronome. It's a challenge, but comes in handy, especially late at night. I always liked tunes that go from one end of the spectrum of dynamics from very quiet to very loud and everything in between. Especially with a blast of accent from time to time like my dad used to do with his accordion.

I understand where your comming from moo, and to somebody like me, that is in the " spectrum " concentration on something that does not come easily, which in my case....single string work, it is something I avoid like getting arrested.

Speed and power is just like breathing to me...being fancy and aware of pleasantness of tone...not so much.

My natural speed for Pike co bd..is quite a bit faster than most people play it...even Earl's recording on that song,is no where near where he played dear ole Dixie, or rolling in my sweet baby's arms, so concentration on playing slower just ain't me, but I can do it , and do it clean when necessary...sitting in my kitchen at 8 in the morning doesn't constitute necessary in my book, and if there are those that feel I am doing a dis service to the hangout and banjodom in general, I'm sure they will reveal themselves and change the channel, all of this is just a monontey breaker, and if anybody is wanting to see and hear serious banjo pickers...I'm sure they know were to look.

If I have this recording figured out...I send my ..short videos..up load to my youtube library, then I share with moo... who then shares with the hangout....anyways, I'm open to request of the scruggs nature, or some melodic infused selections, just whatever you think you would want to hear on this Hatfield...yall give it a think..
Let me know...doesn't have to be scruggs instrumentals it can be kick offs and breaks also, I'd just like to have a sense of direction and purpose.

Ken, that is almost impossible in my current situation.

I really love playing backup...especially scruggs backup, and unless your in a format, where all the musicians are of the same mindset, and skillset,

"Banjo backup is a touchy proposition "... in fact, it starts fights, and breaks up bands, and jam sessions.

I seen and heard..so many arguments about what the banjo is supposed to be doing when not playing lead, and you'd be shocked at the number of musicians that believe and think that Earl himself, over used his backup skills...its sad to think about, and is the very reason you see a decline of backup...up the neck banjo skills , and truthfully, if I know ahead of time that I'm going to be around those types,...I try to make other arrangements, .

Banjo backup ....in Earl's case was an augmentation to help emphasize a down beat, and sometimes a back beat on there tunes that had a dance beat....

Most of my favorite back up from earl came on the infamous
COMPLETE MERCURY SESSIONS
you hear him bouncing up and down the neck out of F and hitting those high notes at the last notable fret on the banjo...just makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up,
This is scruggs back up 101
And it isn't easy....that's why many new pickers avoid it,
It's been my experience that many things, that require lots of practice...and A bit higher skill set...are really criticized

I'm guilty of myself....I'm sad to admit!

With everything that I've been through this past year, I really got a first hand look at how short life is....so I'm going to try to be the best version of me I can, this includes personal health both mental and physical, and yes the banjo...and the first two are much easier to attain.

Good,morning,one and all,

Well,I've got some time,waiting for my clothes to dry, so I thought I'd catch yall up on my mundane life, during the time of coronavirus, and I hope all of you are practicing safe distancing also, and avoid taking chances when possible.

First, thanks to all the kind PM's I got from my last videopost, and I hope to get another one sent to moo in a day or so.

We had a windy day yesterday here in the natti , I thought it was going to blow limbs through my window,a time or two, but this morning is very calm and cool, a beautiful spring morning.

The laundromat I wash cloths at is in my old neighborhood of my Washington were me and the babies used to live,.
The man that renovated it sunk a real chunk of change into it, and it's more than worth the drive from my side of town,for brand new, clean machines, and floors you can eat off of...
There is a park next to it where I walked the babies many a day...I still see our ghosts when I look out over it through tear filled eyes...how the time does fly.

Rumor has it...if you watch any news at all...we could could see movement in the direction of regional openings of the states...depending on how yours has been affected...I dont think we've been hit too hard here in Cincinnati, and I am ready for a hair cut, and to get back in the gym...and possibly start driving truck again when the opportunity presents itself.
My next dr.s appointment is on the 23nd, and I am hoping that my counts are up closer to normal. I feel good and strong, and regardless of the numbers...that is most important to me.
Ok gang..my cloths should be close to dry...got to go pick up some RX and some grub, and head back to my campsite with walls.
Yall drop me a line when your in my neck of the woods.

Before you make a video, try to google how to disable the auto-rotate for your video. Try this one youtube.com/watch?v=9SBCJpGbKfk. You can probably find out one for your specific model or maybe there is an online user manual....or a teenager nearby who can help. I find teenagers are very helpful for new tech with my feeble old mind.

I never joined a league, I took lessons from a friend that boxed golden gloves, and my dad showed me some things from his younger days, then I did some.. " unsupervised " sparring in the army,

My problem was the same as most hitters...I could really hit, but because I could take a punch... I would get beat up both physically and on points, just waiting to land that big swat....I learned to throw hard and straight, but, I'm really short, and I need to get inside to do any damage, and most people had alot of reach on me,...my eyesight was a bit weak so I didn't always pick up a punch I should slip...and since you.ve boxed...you the pitfalls of that...slot of raccoon eyes and broke noses....I wasn't born this ugly....I got beat this way...

I boxed with friends in high school and college and thought I knew a little about it until I boxed a guy named "Fernandez" from New Jersey when I was in college. I'm not trying to generalize, but the name and his home state should have been a warning! Shortly after, I concluded my boxing career! Luckily I learned you dont have to be a semi pro or professional to handle yourself on the street or in a club/bar....I got a good deal of experience as a jailer....drunks when the get contrary have alot of the same tells and mannerisms, the reason drunks dont make good bouncers...

Life experience...there is no substitute for it.

Good afternoon,

Well, it's been a while hasn't it, and like probably most of you people, I wander when life will start to resemble something I recognize before this current state of madness started a few months back.

Never in my life,did I ever think I'd see so much fear in my fellow man,...I'm sorry for all who are afraid, and I wish I could say something to help you,...but it seems that we're told on a daily basis that there is a boogeyman hanging in the air...and its waiting for us to walk into its clutches everytime we walk out the door.....how sad that the tail now wags the dog.

I got out today...did my grocery shopping, and since my banjo needed new strings, I threw it in the back of the trailblazer and headed up to my old buddy Vernon McIntyre's store in millville oh, and I must have picked a couple of hrs with him.
How good it was to play with a great rhythm man again, that knows banjo timing.
Vernon admitted to being a little out of shape, but I had him hitting on all 8 cylinders after about an hour...and not only did we burn a few old favorites, but he had me work up some breaks on some possible new material.

I think I will try to go up and play with him 2 or 3 times a week...he said he's ready to get back up to speed...and that's what I'm all about!

I bought 3 sets of my favorite GHS sonny Osborne strings , so in all...a good little venture out...and I didn't see the bogeyman.

Seriously gang...I hope all of you are healthy, and have the gumption to know that its never good to let another person drive your conscience,...less your willing to let them wreck it too...

Vernon kind of told me the same thing...he said the only thing wrong with my picking was I've been trying to play with the wrong people.

I more or less knew that...but its nice to hear from someone that knows...these long dry spells take a toll on a person's confidence.
I left my athletic gloves I wear as hand protectors up there, so I'm going back again tomorrow.

Vernon was all set to start back at their weekly gig at the winery next week and because of the social distancing requirements, they got a call yesterday, cancelling for the un seen future, this Crap has to get back to normal soon. I'm sick of the fear...got no use for it, and it only serves one purpose.

Glad you got the courts up ken,..I'm hoping they will let our gyms open up by June, and Friday our salons and barbers will be open,..I'm ready for a high and tight,
If I thought I could just walk in at some small town barber I'd drive over to Indiana for a hair cut tomorrow.

yeah warp, the haircuts. the first sob that gives me a flower and tells me to put it in my hair and go to san francisco, I am goin to hit upside the head with a 2X4. I got a clipper on order when they get over backlog.
