Lee, some time ago you posted some "ideal settings" for TabEdit. Do you still have these available? My verison seems to have become very messed up, lines too close, notes too close etc and I need to do a "makeover" on it. Thanks.

I'm trying to do some fiddle tabs. I need to put slurs in the standard notation. For slurs on the same string, I'm using hammer-ons and pull-offs. But I can't find a way to add a slur for the bow crossing from string to string. Any answers?
Also, is there any way to add a quarter note on the + beat in a 1+2+3+4+ measure? I know I can tie two eighth notes but the tab get awkward if I need to add a bend to that tie.
Also, what does it mean when the "light" on the module turns red?
Also, is there a way to tab a bent string that is held when while the roll continues? This is back in banjo territory.
Also, what is the smallest that I can make the tab? I'd like to get a lot of tab on one page. At least until my eyes get really bad!
Thanks
Scott

anyway, the tips were helpful to me, and i'm sure they would be helpful to others who are new to tabledit.

Im currently trying to tab out songs from my earl scruggs banjo book onto tabledit so it is easier to learn for me, and Im having a hard time. How do you know what the spacing should be for the notes? The song is just not flowing sometimes the notes will sound out fast and the rythym sounds way off. Is there a tutorial on how to correctly make a tabledit file from banjo tabs?
banjo_brad - Posted - 10/19/2007: 14:10:25
You need to use the "ruler" and set the time signature correctly. Check the help files for tabledit, or the user manual (available as a pdf download). The manual has a good tutorial to start with.

Yo Slow, to stay sane with TableEdit, try this for starters:
1. For each new tab, if the time Sig isn't at 4/4, pull down Score and set the Time Signature for all measures (be careful, the default is for measure 1 only) to 4/4. This will result in 4 groups of 2 eighth notes per measure, which is not how banjo tab is usually written, but oh well...and it will also result in the tempo (beats/minute) being displayed as twice what it really is (60 bpm will be shown as 120 bmp).
2. Pull down Display and select 'Scale to 1/8 notes' (default is usually 1/16 notes) unless you will be tabbing one or more triplets, in which case select 'Scale to 1/16 notes'.
3. Check to see that 1/8 notes are selected in the Notes toolbar (or press the F7 key to accomplish the same thing).
4. Then start entering notes, and when you press either the Tab key or the right-arrow key you will move to the next eighth note space in the tablature.
5. If you need triplets and have selected 'Scale to 1/16 notes', then be aware that when you press the right-arrow key to move to the next note-space in the score, the highlight will move 1/16 rather than 1/8, so you will need to press it twice to get the the next 1/8 note. But if you use the Tab key to advance the highlight, it will move the highlight to the next eighth note spot, assuming that you are entering 1/8-notes (F7 was pressed). Try this to see what I mean.
6. If you need to enter a triplet, type the notes into three consecutive 1/16-note spaces (see paragraph above), then select all three of them and click the Triplet button in the Notes toolbar.

Since he is putting the tabs from Earl's book into tabledit, he should use the 1/16 default. There are scads of 1/16 notes in that book!
But thanks for elaborating on the setup.
Also, that book has a lot of the tabs(scores) in 2/4 time, so he should select 2/4 time for those.

Hi BB, right, because he's correctly using 2/4 time instead of 4/4. So yeh, don't use 4/4 if you're going to use 16th notes. You also get the correct tempo with 2/4 and 16th notes, BTW.
But then if triplets are needed, you'd need to set the scale to 32nd notes in order to be able to enter a triplet properly [Brad, if you know a way around this, I'd be very happy to hear about it], which results in the issue I mentioned in the previous post with regard to use of the Right-arrow key vs. Tab key when moving to successive positions in the notation.
I don't have my tab books with me at the moment, but I seem to recall that most other tab books (Tony T's Banjo Songbook, for example) use what look like 8th notes--two groups of 4 notes per measure. To get that 'look', use 2/2 and 8th notes.
TableEdit is very cool software indeed. Is there any way to use sampled sounds with it for a more banjoistic feel?
Cheers,
Dave
banjo_brad - Posted - 10/19/2007: 21:02:28
I enter a triplet as follows:
1. Go to the "Note" dropdown and select the note period you want the triplet to occupy, i.e. 1/8
2. Then select the "triplet" option.
3. Enter the first note of the triplet, press "tab," enter the middle note of the triplet, press "tab," enter the third note of the triplet and press tab.
The triplet will appear properly on the tablature and the cursor will appear at the next note position.
4. Go back to the "Note" dropdown and select "Automatic Duration," and you're back to standard entry.
Of course, since I'm a Clawhammerer, I don't use 1/16 as a standard, and most stuff is in 4/4 or 3/4 time.

Brad, thanks---I do the same thing, but using the toolbar buttons instead of the menu. You are using the defaults of 4/4 time, eighth notes in the tab, and "Scale to 16th notes"? That way, there is a space between each of the 8th notes such that you can enter the triplet note. If you had chosen "Scale to 8th notes", you wouldn't be able to enter a triplet, AFAICS.

DaveInCA - Posted - 10/20/2007: 11:32:07
Uh-oh..........TablEdit will only do syncopation with 8th notes [sigh]. Forget tabbing in 16th notes in 2/4 time if you want playback with bounce. Perhaps this is why most folks tab in 8th notes with this software.

I am tabbing (in TablEdit 2.6) some runs that require only the 5th string to be capo'd up 2 frets. In the Score:Instrument:Tuning dialog, there is a place to set the 5th string capo position, but it doesn't seem to have an effect on the midi playback. Tuning the 5th string to A in that dialog results in a mess, as the 5th-string fingerings are then off by 2 frets. Is there something I'm missing here? Thanks.
Dave
banjo_brad - Posted - 10/22/2007: 20:01:54
Dave,
Leave the 5th capo at 5, tune the 5th to A and make sure it impacts notes. That should cover it.

Hi Brad, thanks for your reply, and you're not using the 5th string capo setting at all? It actually does work, but only if you set the 5th-string capo *before* putting the notes in for the open 5th string! I had assumed it would behave like the regular capo setting and had entered the open 5th-string notes first. It's an easy fix...just re-enter the notes and they're then correct.
The method you describe will work if the 5th string isn't fretted. But if it is fretted in the way we fret when we use a real 5th-string capo, the fretted notes will be too high by the amount you have tuned up the 5th string. That is as it should be--if you tune the 5th string of a banjo up a step to A, it changes all the fingerings on the 5th string.

Yeah, I've noticed that in the latest 2 releases. There are several things that I see that haven't worked like they used to since I got my iMac, and I'm not sure if it is the iMac or the later releases of Tabledit.
I just leave the 5th string at it's default in the capo box and change the tuning on the strings area. I find if I then capo the other strings, they change their pitch but the 5th remains where I set it. I don't use a 5th string capo, and I haven't had the nerve to spike my Chuck Lee, so I just tune the 5th up to A. And I have only run across one tune (tab) that frets the 5th string.
Sounds like you enter notes then set the tuning for the instrument. I have always set the tuning, key and time signatures before I start tabbing (or importing).

Yes, I just start tabbing and deal with the capo setting later, which is not an issue except (as it turns out) for the 5th string setting. I haven't done much messing with the time sig after doing a tab--but now that you mention it I'll give it a try! Need to know the limits of this app. ;-)
Re not wanting to spike your gorgeous machine, you can get a non-invasive 5th-string capo at Janet Davis' site. It just clips on.
>so I just tune the 5th up to A
That works for songs/tunes in A (although it screws up the fingering when the 5th is fretted), but what about all the Bb, B, and C-capoed tunes? I fret the 5th string a lot--almost any melodic playing requires it.

Yeah, I guess if you play a lot of Bluegrass/melodic, you might need to fret the 5th. Me, I play out of G, C, Dble C, Sawmill and Gm (plus capo 2), and only have one tune right now that could use a 9th fret spike ("Kennedy Rag" arranged by Hugh Strawn). I clawhammer and do a (very) little OT 2-finger.

Yes, indeed!
But now I have a TablEdit problem and I hope you have been here and found a workaround. There are bugs in this app having to do with text placed on the page followed by removal of measures---something isn't being tracked properly behind the scenes and the print preview format gets screwed up. At the moment, Titles are not showing up at all in previews of any tab file, and the time sig is showing up as HUGE bold and doubled numbers between the first and second groups of tab lines. Any idea where the settings for the app are kept? I haven't looked in the registry yet, but I'm heading there now...
Hmmm, well the registry is where it's all at, but the problem got solved by discovering that somehow some font sizes had been changed to ridiculously large values (did I do that?? didn't intend to...). Fixing those brought back the Title and fixed the time sig. size and location. Whew.

I have recently switched computers and went from an XP operating system to Vista. On my old computer (I downloaded the free viewer a couple of years ago), when I printed the tabs, it would print them no problem. I get the new computer and download the freeviewer again and now when I print, it puts "Demo Version" all through the tab---It is basically useless to print it. It is funny because when I view it on my screen that is not there. What is the deal?
Thanks...

I am totally new to all this. In general, what can you do with tabledit? Can tabledit "listen" to a song, and then transcribe the song into tablature, or is tabledit like a powerpoint, where you input the notes and then tabledit plays them back?
DaveInCA - Posted - 02/24/2008: 03:49:15
>where you input the notes and then tabledit plays them back
Hi George, yes, that's it if you have the full version of the software. The free Viewer version just plays the files (analogous to Acrobat Full version and the free reader). TablEdit also prints the tab very nicely, will display the tab in standard notation if you wish, and the playback aspect of it is really revolutionary vs. tabbing by hand as it allows you to not only recall what you just entered, but to hear how it sounds. That feature alone is worth the price, IMO. And you can enter parts for multiple instruments which can then be played back simultaneously. Lots of other little stuff pertaining to tabbing needs--check out the manual or look thru the lessons above. The midi synth sound of all the instruments is tacky as usual, but oh well...;-)
Re software that can simply "listen" to a banjo and then tab what it "hears", if you successfully midi-ize your banjo, it can then send data on-the-fly to TablEdit where the data can allegedly be converted to tab, although perhaps not entirely accurately, time-wise. Additional cost of about $250 for the midi-related gear (which is non-destructive of the banjo, BTW) at Guitar Center or other discount biz.
