Here are two reels that I recorded a couple years ago. The first one is a beautiful melody that surfaces a little more clearly to my ear when played at a moderate versus fast tempo, Julia Delaney. The second one is a well-known session tune just about anywhere I would think, The Silver Spear.

Hope a few of you can record one or two of these,

Wayne

Here is how the big boys handle Julia:

Here's a nice version of the Spear followed by Tamlin:

Nicely done! Nice tone as well. I like a banjo to rattle and growl a little and I hear that in your Deering.

Ah, great tunes Wayne, I will get Silver Spear up, needs a little work, and need a new tune, so Julia Delaney it is, thanks!

lovely

Very well done Wayne. I'm going to study your Julia Delaney to get some more interesting variations for the B part. Until then here is my offering

Nicely done James. The UK has been properly represented.

I particularly liked the End On F ending!

Nice job James, I have to learn Julia so will be studying a few videos to learn it.  I am excited, sounds like a great tune and one I will really enjoy playing.  I won't be able to start learning it until next week so if anyone has one please share it (FYI - I learn by ear).

I posted about the Hangout TOTM over on Facebook and James followed that with his video submission, so hopefully we can get some others uploading their versions.

Here's "The Silver Spear"  from 2 years ago when I started playing the Tenor

Great versions everyone! I already have the Silver Spear, but need to work on Julia Delaney's as it's a new one to me - has a dark quality to it that I really like!

I love the "lift" that they get into that tune

I  agree for sure. When I got my darker Ome, my wife asked if I'd get rid of the Deering and I told her no, I needed to keep the snap and growl of the Deering for those times when the Ome might not be as suited. It's like the two tenor banjos I have are bookends; each one holding it's own in different tonal territories.

I understand totally.  I see/hear your and Jill's new Omes and think I'd like to eventually complement my resonated Clareen with a large head open-back.  Angelina Carberry's open-back sounds wonderful as well.  I have a wonderful 12 inch Ramsey Woody 5-string that I would love to hear with a tenor neck.  Too many temptations in this wicked world. wink

As soon as Wayne posted the video, I knew I recognised Julia Delaney from somewhere, but couldn't think where. I finally tracked it down to the middle section of Dan Tyminksi's rendition of The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn with the Transatlantic Sessions. Well worth a listen for some inspiration.

Wayne, thanks for 2 tunes with killer B parts, really putting the pressure on me with this 23" scale.  If you remember I posted not too long ago about playing the high B after switching to my Vegaphone.  Well, practice, practice, practice and making the jump with the pinky finger is the only way I can figure to play these 2 tunes.  The f to a in Julia Delaney isn't as bad as the f to d in | f e d e | f d A C |, so I changed that part slightly because the f to d stretch was too difficult for me right now.  I play the B part of Silver Spear | f# a 3a | b a f# a |, which wasn't a problem on the short scale, I am still working on getting this down on the Vegaphone.  So, hopefully before the end of the month I will have them up.

Great tunes though, JD is fast becoming a favorite!

Here's a tutorial on Julia Delaney's on Mandolin.

Looks a lot easier on Mandolin!

Dan,  no less a talent than Enda Scahill suggested that approach to me when I was discussing the difficult fingering I found in Musical Priest.

Nice playing, guys! I'm immensely late on this one. :) Here's a set of both tunes.

captbanjo - Posted - 03/30/2017:  16:03:34

Way to go Benjamin! By the way, I really don't think there is a 'late' to this stuff. When and if someone gets to it, to me that's cool. Life doesn't always give us enough time to do it all, huh?

That was great Ben.  I have been working hard at both of them and am getting there, no thanks to my shoulder as I can't play the banjo only the tenor guitar right now.  But, I think I am going to slow down Bens version to see how he handles the B part of both of them,   I think I might help me out!

benhockenberry - Posted - 03/30/2017:  18:20:45

My fingers flail about like crazy, ya don't want to learn off of that Dan! ;)

Finally got around to recording this - I moved recently so things have been hectic! Still working on that stretch to the high B!

captbanjo - Posted - 04/16/2017:  19:38:21

Good.

Really good.

Really, really good!

That was just AWESOME Jill.

ruraltradpunk - Posted - 04/17/2017:  09:26:47

Cheers lads - still getting it up to speed. Usually the stretch to the high B isn't too bad for me but in this particular tune I find it much more challenging to do cleanly!

To play the sequence of notes with the high A in this tune is harder for me than most tunes with the high B.  I think it is because the finger position  is spanning five frets and requiring that each note be one full step apart from the last note played.

benhockenberry - Posted - 04/18/2017:  04:42:50

Agreed! The 1-5 stretch is trickier for me to get "spot-on" than the 2-7 stretch, probably due to having a lot more tunes to practice the 2-7 stretch on, I think. Great swing and backbeat in your playing, Jill, love it!
