Mine was set up by Clancy Mullins. I doubt you can improve on it.
I did have a question for you involving the tailpiece, but I've e-mailed Clancy instead.

We all know stuff from our own experiences.
I've been studying archtop banjos since 1976.

I've had four Volkswagens since 1969 (the same number of archtops you've had since 1976), so I guess that makes me an expert on Volkswagens.

It makes you more of an expert than someone who's only owned Buicks.

I counted on my fingers. I was mistaken; I've had five Volkswagens since 1969 (all Beetles), six if I count the Jetta. (It always slips my mind; it was stolen from my driveway in Liberty, MO, in 1984.)
I've had only one Buick, a Centurion 4-door hardtop.
In college (late 60s), I had a 1950 Packard Deluxe 4-door sedan. (Packard's understated advertising slogan: "Ask the man who owns one.")
A buddy of mine had a Borgward!

(Reminds me... That an elephant is like a snake according to the blind man who has only felt the trunk... He knows he is right...)

With two ex-wives, a daughter who is an attorney, a spouse who is likewise an attorney, and a daughter-in-law who is a clinical psychologist, the odds that I am going to be right about anything, anytime, approach zero.

You're trying too hard,Russ. If you tear down that VW,blueprint the engine and win races with it you would indeed be some kind of expert. You have no idea what I've studied and discovered about banjos so how can you compare yourself and a VW to that?
