Key of G – gDGBD

In this, Tunetorial number 52, Dan "Clawdan" Levenson teaches Doc Robert’s Shortinin’ Bread. NO, Not Your Mamma’s Little Shortnin Bread! This one’s whole different loaf – well, pan. This one is a challenging tune and one that is hard to “simplify” so hang on and check it out.

Dan's source for this one is Doc Robert’s own recording which can be found on volume 3 (1930-34) of his complete works. Charlie Walden recorded a nice version as well on the Traditional Fiddle Music of Missouri though he titles it The Irish Cobbler. Yes, both fiddle resources but important for this tune.

You can purchase the video lesson (for unlimited streaming and download) here on the Banjo Hangout for $6.

Feel free to post any questions you have on it, remark on sections you would like clarified or things you might like added. Yes even the things you don’t like are fair game. It grows the tune and the community when you know what you like and don’t like as you build your own style. As always it would be great to hear some of your versions so far so post them here for all to hear!

We would like some feedback as to how you are enjoying these and whether or not Dan should keep posting more.

This tune is tabbed out in Dan's book "Old-Time Favorites for Clawhammer Banjo" (MelBay 30224). Tab and standard notation with 2 cds of banjo and fiddle audio tracks. The fiddle notation and mandolin tab can be found in the companion book “Old Time Favorites for Fiddle and Mandolin” (MelBay 30225)

youtu.be/OgWfSKDBYEc     This is one of our very favorite tunes!!! I heard Rhys Jones and Jeff Miller play this before I looked up the Doc Roberts recording. I do finger pick the 4th part of the tune as nod to Doc's syncopated approach(I hope).

youtu.be/nTvpZSb7QE0     Check out this brilliant version by the great Anna Roberts and Brent Feito.I think Jesse Wells is the guitarist.

That is indeed a GREAT one Don. They recorded it again on the New Fogies (?) album but the video is definatley better!

BTW, Dan...I learned "Little Billy Wilson" from playing along with your "windy" video. Thanks!
Also, Doc's "The Cat Came Back" strikes me as quite similar to "Shortening Bread" and almost as much fun. Gotta learn that one next!
