<shameless-self-promotion>I have the sublime fortune of being in one of the opening acts for a heck of a show coming up in two weeks on Jul 28th.
The Way Down wanderers are coming in from Chicago (thewaydownwanderers.com/listen) to headline at The Firebird downtown. They're something of an alt-folk Americana act.
In the middle slot are locals ClusterPluck (reverbnation.com/clusterpluck), a big fun group of high-energy Newgrass players.
And opening up are yours truly and the other members of The Lonely Mountain String Band (reverbnation.com/thelonelymoun...tringband), so named because we take the lyrics that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote for the songs in his Middle-Earth novels and set them to string band music.
Apart from the shameless self-promotion angle here, this is one of the top five music clubs in town that mostly does rock shows and some comedy. It's an unusual thing that they'd feature an entire bill of this sort of stuff, and I'm proud to be a part of it. if anybody in the neighborhood feels like stopping by, please don't hesitate to say hello. :)</shameless-self-promotion>

Sounds like a fun show Cluster Pluck is always terrific. The headlines seem like a talented bunch of kids who need to put away their Mumford and Sons albums for a while, but I want to hear Tolkien lyrics set to string band music! Love the name! Have you heard this?

I'd share some recordings, but we're being extra cautious about infringement as we have reached out to Harper-Collins & The Tolkien Estate about proper licensing of the words. (Playing live is legal without explicit permission under the same legal framework as a cover-band as long as the venue has an ASCAP/BMI site license.) Hopefully they'll respond yet this Summer (and not want more than we can pay). Even if they say "no," it'll be neat to know that Christopher Tolkien gave our demo a listen before shooting us down.
