First released on Flatt & Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Jamboree" (Columbia) album Our featured tune this week is one of Earl's lesser-known tunes, but it's still mighty fine!
Two things that make this tune stand out from the crowd--the first is the use of D-tuners, which change the pitch of the note using the actual tuning peg... the second is the use of harmonics ("chimes") in the B part of the tune (hence the name of the tune). Both of these techniques are always useful if you want to impress folks at a concert!

Another thing that is unusual is the chime part is played in the key of D, then proceeds back to G when you retune the banjo.

"The Story" was very fascinating & very informational. Was just listening to "Banjo Bandits" (Roy Clark & Buck Trent) with my wife a couple nights ago, she asked about how they were doing certain things, so I was showing/playing her some (with my limited ability, much slower) & just explaining others including "D-Tuning" to her as best I could (I don't have D-tuners, so couldn't show her that).
Read her "The Story" & showed her the pictures to much better explain it to her, both of us. Just joined a couple weeks ago & have already learned a lot, enjoyed it tremendously, helps keep me motivated (just starting to play again after about a decade.) Love, love, love this place. :)
