Key of D – aDADE
In this, tunetorial number 51, Dan "Clawdan" Levenson teaches Martha Campbell.
This is one of Dan's most played all time favorites! Play it simply or play the full melody. Up to you.
There is not one, but two definitive versions of this tune. Buddy Thomas is the most recognized and probably the source for most of us, on the other hand, Fiddlin’ Doc Roberts’ version would be older and is equally a must-hear resource. Other fiddle resources would be Jimmy Wheeler and John Morgan Salyer. For a banjo version we love Ray Alden’s from his Old Time Friends recording.
You can purchase the video lesson (for unlimited streaming and download) here on the Banjo Hangout for $6.
Feel free to post any questions you have on it, remark on sections you would like clarified or things you might like added. Yes even the things you don’t like are fair game. It grows the tune and the community when you know what you like and don’t like as you build your own style.
This version of Martha Campbell is tabbed out in Dan's book Old Time Festival Tunes for Clawhammer Banjo (MB 20313).
As always it would be great to hear some of your versions so far so post them here for all to hear! Also, I would like some feedback as to how you are enjoying these and whether or not I should keep posting more. Next one marks 52 or a year of tunes!
