New Orleans Rhythm Kings

This week's Scruggs-style featured tune started out as a jazz instrumental. Written in 1922 by Paul Mares, Leon Roppolo and Elmer Schoebel, "Farewell Blues" quickly became a jazz standard. The New Orleans Rhythm Kings recorded it that same year, and lots of other folks followed suit soon after.

Flatt & Scruggs brought it over to bluegrass, recording it on their Mercury Sessions sometime between 1948-1950.

Played in C in the bluegrass world--in drop C tuning.

Learn the Tune:

  • We have a lesson video from Casey Henry teaching Earl's arrangement of this tune. Only $6 thru 6/16! Get it here >

  • Backing Tracks: I've including backing tracks at various speeds with the banjo removed from the mix.

  • Tabs: several versions in the tab archive

Share!

I (and others) would love to hear (and see!) you play your version of this tune--post it in a reply below!

Sorry, everyone! Didn't realize this one didn't have a sample clip. I don't know how to link to it where it is hosted here on BHO, but here is the youtube link:
