Key of D – aDADE
In this, tunetorial number 47, Dan "Clawdan" Levenson teaches Wild Hog in The Woods.
There are several tunes with this name and quite different from one another. This one is the one referred to as the “modal” one and is related to the version called “Old Bangum” or “Bangum and the Boar”. Some of the versions Dan has of this one are from The Possum Trot Stringband, The Albemarle Ramblers, Reed Island Rounders and The Kimble Family. One good recent version of “Bangum” is the one by Curt Bouterse on his latest release “Wooden Nickel”. There is another acapella version by Dee Hicks form the Music of the Cumber land Plateau as well, but that one, while related, is a bit farther away from this actual melody.
While this one has the modal sound, it is not played in “modal” tuning. That said, Dan plays it out of standard double D tuning.
Feel free to post any questions you have on it, remark on sections you would like clarified or things you might like added. Yes even the things you don’t like are fair game. It grows the tune and the community when you know what you like and don’t like as you build your own style.
This version of Wild Hog is tabbed out in Dan's book Old Time Favorites for Clawhammer Banjo (MB 30224).
You can purchase the video lesson (for unlimited streaming and download) here on the Banjo Hangout for $6.
It would be great to hear some of your versions so far so post them here for all to hear!
Also, as we approach the 50 mark, Dan and I would like some feedback as to how you are enjoying these and whether or not we should keep posting more.

I would like to say how much I am enjoying learning the tunes in Dan's Tunetorials. He is a banjo player par excellence and has the gift of showing how to break a tune down to give variation and make it more interesting. Please keep on posting them.

Graham,
I agree with you: these tunetorials are really great.
I learnt a lot of things thanks to them and now they give me liberty and joy to play on my banjo.
Please, Dan, go on !

This is a song I've wanted to work on for a while and Dan's instruction adds a lot more flavor than I could have managed on my own.

These are a wonderful resource, but I'd say don't get discouraged if the download rate seems a little low. At least for a novice player, to do one of these lessons justice takes time. It takes a while to build it up to as near perfect as can be, then it has to be included in a practice routine which necessarily includes all other tunes learned, so that they can all be continuously worked on and improved. This means, at least for me, that the rate of learning new tunes is going to be pretty slow, although I expect it to go on for many years.
But I'd just like to express my appreciation for what Dan is doing here. Thanks Dan!

Thanks all,
Got number 50 recorded and ready for next week. Might take a week off as I am on vacation this week enjoying my home town of Pittsburgh, PA and my younger son's birthday. Mine too, Sunday so I SHOULD get one recorded on schedule but don't worry if we miss a week.
Again, thank you all for the positive feedback.
Play Nice,
Dan
