The Carter Family - Maybelle, A.P, and Sara (L-R)

This week's tune began as a song from the Carter Family, and later morphed into an instrumental. As far as I can tell it was originally called "Carter's Blues" when the Carter Family recorded it (here's a record with it as the A-side).

Flatt & Scruggs recorded it as an instrumental and called it "False-Hearted Lover." It's the same melody as the original, but without any singing, yodelling or funky timing like the original had! It can be found on the Bear Family 1959-1963 box set, and also on their 1976 "Songs Of The Famous Carter Family" released on Columbia Records. Larry Spark is also well-known for performing it as an instrumental.

The lead break(s) on banjo are really cool on this tune--slower and very bluesy. Give it a try for something a little different from the Scruggs norm!

The instrumental version is typically played in G or A.

Here's Earl's guitar version of False Hearted Lover.. Earl is rarely thought of as a guitar player but he was great at playing guitar too...Jack  p.s. Eric's recorded version may be from a different than this one--not sure, but it's Earl's arrangement...

Are the chords just 1 and 5 on this tune? I had never heard this song before but I've learned the 1st break of Casey's version and I think it's going to be a fun tune to play.
