Key of A – aEAC#E

Salt Creek – aka Salt River is a tricky tune with many variants on the melody. Dan has recordings of it by Buddy Thomas and Henry Reed (fiddlers) which make good sources for the tune. Rhys Jones, Jeff Miller and Jim Nelson play a killer stringband version on their “All I’ve Gots Done Gone” recording and then there is that great jam recording with (we think) Dirk Powell playing banjo and there is a cool old Franklin George recording of him on banjo with the parts reversed from how most folks play it. No matter, great stuff. Find a good reference and go from there.

For those wanting tab, you will find it in Dan's Old Time Favorites for Clawhammer Banjo (Melbay 30224).

As in past weeks, Dan just plays the tune and break down sections on the fly.

You can purchase the video lesson (for unlimited streaming and download) here on the Banjo Hangout for $6.

Dan and I would love to hear any feedback you have on these videos, so feel free to post or email us. Our goal here is provide a steady, affordable way for people to learn a new clawhammer tune weekly (or as often as they'd like).

It would be great to hear some of your versions so far so post them here for all to hear!

Very cool Jason. Nice job. I'd say a bit "paced" (which is normal especially when learning a tune) so try thinking more rhythmically while you play. Eyes closed?

Dan

Thanks Guys,

Dan, I don't think my eyes were closed because I had to watch the fretboard to hit that high note on the 9th fret. I will work on my rhythm. I really enjoyed tunetorial. It's a great way to learn a tune.
