And a plug for his new CD Nansemond. It won't be to everyone's taste with only a couple of traditional tunes on it, but I enjoy his use of clawhammer technique (with a drummer's spin on it) applied to his own compositions. Rather John Faheyesque. Very improvisational and a big step on from his first A Bottle, A Buckeye. His video of the closing track Sleepy Lake Tyre Swing on Youtube will give you the flavour. (I found a lovely house in Sleepy Lake Va with 0.76 acre lakeside site for what seemed like a giveaway price by UK standards. Didn't have a tyre swing though so no deal.)

Actually now I've heard the record a few more times, Sleepy Lake Tyre Swing on Youtube is only one of the flavours on it - there are lots of others.

And his Buckeye #101 sounding good.

Thanks for posting this Adam. I had run across Nathan on youtube a year or so back and really liked his playing. Then I somehow forgot all about him. He has a great approach to the music and I was glad to re-discover him.

Nathan's record company, Paradise of Bachelors, has added some more videos of live versions of some more tracks from Nansemond on YouTube and a lovely version of Elk River Blues from his first banjo CD. Well worth a look.

Greg's standard tone ring is rolled brass. On his old website #101 was described and the tone ring wasn't specified. Since he does usually specify the type of tone ring in his descriptions if it's anything other than standard, my guess is that #101 is standard rolled brass. Pure surmise though.

Yep, #101 is setup with a 5/16" rolled brass tone ring - it also has a skin head, a 12" diameter pot and is walnut. This combo has been one of my favorites and is also the same as my main banjo.
